Can you use chlorine bleach on marble?
Better not. Chlorine bleach on marble risks damage, and there is a safer option for almost every stain. It can dull and discolour polished marble, and it does nothing for most stains in stone. The exception is mildew on stone, where stone-care guides use a weak solution (about ½ cup per gallon of water) and rinse it off.

02 Why: the two sides
Marble
Marble is porous stone, so spills can soak in and stains have to be drawn back out.
Marble, limestone and travertine are calcium carbonate, which acids dissolve: that is etching.
It is porous, so time matters: the longer a spill sits, the deeper it goes.
Chlorine bleach
Sodium hypochlorite solution, usually 3–8% as sold. A strong oxidiser and disinfectant. pH 11–13.
Never mix with vinegar, other acids, ammonia, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide: these release toxic gases or react violently.
03 Use instead
Follow the stain file for the specific stain on marble; each one picks the safe product for that combination.

06 More about chlorine bleach
Chlorine bleach is a powerful oxidiser and disinfectant. It destroys colour, including the colour of dyes you want to keep, and it reacts dangerously with acids, ammonia and alcohols.
On an ingredient list, chlorine bleach shows up as sodium hypochlorite (sometimes listed as "chlorine bleach" or "hypochlorite").
- It can worsen rust stains and damage incompatible fibres or dyes. It is not a universal treatment for protein stains.
Never mix it with white vinegar, ammonia, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen bleach, lemon juice, acetone, toilet bowl cleaner, ammonia-based glass cleaner, enzyme cleaner and oxalic acid cleanser. Why.
07 Already used it?
If acid has already touched it, look for a dull, rough patch: that is an etch. Rinse with water, dry, and use a marble polishing powder for a small etch, or a stone restorer for anything larger.
08 Questions
Is diluted chlorine bleach safe on marble?
Diluted is less risky, but the problem is the chemistry, not the strength: it can dull and discolour polished marble, and it does nothing for most stains in stone. The exception is mildew on stone, where stone-care guides use a weak solution (about ½ cup per gallon of water) and rinse it off.
What should I use on marble instead of chlorine bleach?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on marble the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix chlorine bleach with other cleaners on marble?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.
Does chlorine bleach remove stains from marble?
None of the 31 files for marble uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.
How long can chlorine bleach stay on marble?
Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
