Myth files: stain tricks, tested against chemistry
Salt on wine, hairspray on ink, club soda on everything: which tricks work, which half-work, and which make it worse.
Most stain myths survive because they contain a grain of truth. Salt does absorb liquid; club soda is mostly water, and water helps; hairspray used to be mostly alcohol. Each file explains the chemistry behind the trick, says when it helps and when it backfires, and links to the method that works on the surfaces where people try it.
- Does salt get red wine out?BustedSalt soaks up some liquid, but it does not lift wine pigment and can lock colour in as it dries.
- Does white wine remove red wine?BustedWhite wine dilutes red wine exactly as water does, and adds sugar and acid.
- Does club soda remove stains?Half trueClub soda works about as well as plain water. The bubbles are not doing the work.
- Does hairspray remove ink?Half trueIt used to work because hairspray was mostly alcohol. Modern formulas add resins and oils that can leave a new stain.
- Does hot water set stains?ConfirmedFor protein stains, yes: heat cooks them onto fibres. For grease, warm water actually helps.
- Does Coca-Cola remove rust?Half trueIts phosphoric acid dissolves a little rust on metal, slowly. On fabric or stone it leaves a sugary brown stain.
- Does sunlight remove stains?Half trueSun genuinely fades some pigments (turmeric, tomato, baby poop, some yellowing) but it fades dyes in coloured fabric too.
- Is dish soap really the best thing for grease stains?ConfirmedYes. Dish soap is a concentrated surfactant built to lift fat, and it is gentle enough for most washable fabrics.
- Does baby powder or cornstarch remove grease stains?ConfirmedOn fresh oil, yes: fine powders wick oil out of fibres. They are the first step, not the whole fix.
- Does peanut butter get gum out?Half trueThe oils do soften gum, but you are left with a grease stain. Ice is cleaner.
- Does ice really remove chewing gum?ConfirmedYes: cold makes the gum base brittle so it snaps off instead of stretching.
- Do baby wipes remove makeup stains?Half trueOn fresh makeup they can lift the surface, but rubbing a wipe spreads pigment and leaves residue.
- Does nail polish remover get nail polish off everything?BustedAcetone dissolves nail polish, but it also dissolves acetate fabric, plastics, wood finishes and paint.
- Does aspirin remove yellow sweat stains?Half trueCrushed aspirin is a mild acid, so it helps a little. Use a labelled fabric treatment instead of assuming a homemade aspirin paste is effective.
- Does saliva remove blood?Half trueOn a pinprick of fresh blood it helps about as much as a dab of cold water. Its main enzyme digests starch, not blood.
- Does meat tenderizer remove blood stains?ConfirmedYes, unseasoned tenderizer contains papain, a protein-digesting enzyme. Never on wool or silk.
- Does hydrogen peroxide remove blood?ConfirmedYes, especially on whites. It foams because blood's own catalase breaks it down. Test colours first.
- Does sunlight remove baby poop stains?ConfirmedYes: bile pigments in breastfed-baby poop break down in sunlight. Wash first, then sun.
- Does WD-40 remove stains?Half trueIt loosens crayon, gum, adhesive and old grease, but it is an oil, so it leaves an oil stain of its own.
- Does milk remove ink stains?BustedAn old remedy with little effect on modern ballpoint ink, and it adds a protein stain.
- Does bleach remove all stains?BustedChlorine bleach removes colour from some stains, but it makes rust, sunscreen and protein stains worse and dissolves wool and silk.
- Does mayonnaise remove water rings from wood?Half trueOn white rings in the finish, sometimes: oil and gentle warmth help trapped moisture escape. On black rings, never.
- Does toothpaste remove stains?Half trueIt is a mild abrasive, so it scrubs marks off hard surfaces and sneaker rubber. On fabric it mostly spreads.
- Does vinegar and baking soda clean stains?BustedThey neutralise each other. The fizz is carbon dioxide, and what is left is mostly salty water.
- Does shaving cream remove carpet stains?Half trueIts foam is a surfactant, so it can lift fresh spots, but it must be rinsed out or it attracts dirt.
- Does rubbing a stain help it come out faster?BustedRubbing spreads the stain, pushes it deeper and damages fibres. Blot instead.
