06 More about borax

On an ingredient list, borax shows up as sodium tetraborate, sodium borate or disodium tetraborate.

  • Toxic if swallowed; keep away from children and pets.

07 Already used it?

Wipe it off with a damp cloth straight away, let the leather dry naturally, then condition it. A dull, pale or sticky patch means the finish has been stripped and needs a leather recolouring balm or a professional.

08 Questions

Is diluted borax safe on leather?

No. Dilution slows the damage but does not change what borax does to leather: it dries and discolours leather.

What should I use on leather instead of borax?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on leather the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix borax with other cleaners on leather?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does borax remove stains from leather?

None of the 41 files for leather uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can borax stay on leather?

Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
