- Never It frays carpet and velvet pile.
02 Why: the two sides
Carpet
Carpet has a pile: cut or looped fibre ends standing up from a backing, which hides how far liquid has spread.
Carpet cannot be rinsed through, so whatever you put on it partly stays in it.
The fibre in carpet is synthetic (polyester, nylon or similar): tough against most chemicals, but sensitive to heat and solvents, and it holds oily stains tightly.
Melamine sponge (magic eraser)
Melamine foam: a very fine abrasive that works like ultra-fine sandpaper. pH n/a.
It is an abrasive: it removes a thin layer of whatever it is used on.

08 Questions
Is diluted melamine sponge safe on carpet?
No. Dilution slows the damage but does not change what a melamine sponge does to carpet: it frays carpet and velvet pile.
What should I use on carpet instead of a melamine sponge?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on carpet the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix a melamine sponge with other cleaners on carpet?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

None of the 63 files for carpet uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.
How long can melamine sponge stay on carpet?
Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
