How to get ink out of a microfiber couch
Dab with alcohol; blot with soapy foam. Never hairspray or rubbing. A tough one on a microfiber couch: expect more than one round.

01 The short answer
To get ink out of a microfiber couch, work in this order: (1) dab with alcohol; (2) blot with soapy foam. Test rubbing alcohol on a hidden spot first. After a manufacturer-approved cleaning method has dried, use a soft brush only if the care instructions allow it.
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
02 Never do this
- Hairspray. Modern formulas add resins and oils that leave a second stain; rubbing alcohol is what the trick relied on.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It untwists the pile and spreads the stain sideways; press and lift instead.
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a microfiber couch.
- Find the actual cleaning instructions: W permits suitable water-based spot cleaners; W/S permits suitable water- or solvent-based products; S requires its specified solvent method, preferably professional cleaning; X permits vacuuming or light brushing only. If the code is missing, obtain manufacturer advice before using liquids.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Dab with alcohol
Dab rubbing alcohol onto the stain with a cotton pad or white cloth, then blot with a dry cloth; the ink transfers to the cloth. Change to a clean area each time. Do not pour it on.
Why it works: Ink dissolves in alcohol but not water, and alcohol evaporates before it can soak the backing.

Blot with soapy foam
Mix ¼ teaspoon of clear dish soap in 1 cup (240 ml) of warm water, whisk it until foamy, and dab the foam onto the stain with a white cloth. Blot, repeat until no more transfers, then blot with a cloth dampened in plain water to rinse.
Why it works: Using the foam rather than the water keeps the microfiber couch from getting soaked; the soap still lifts the oil.

Brush the nap up
After a manufacturer-approved cleaning method has dried, use a soft brush only if the care instructions allow it.
Why it works: Cleaning flattens microfiber; brushing restores the nap.
2 min hands-on
Test first: rubbing alcohol on a microfiber couch. Read the actual upholstery cleaning code and maker instructions. Microfiber can have different care requirements; neither water nor rubbing alcohol is automatically suitable.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting.
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
- An old stain in carpet or upholstery may have reached the backing or padding. If it keeps coming back as it dries, a professional hot-water extraction is the next step.
If a shadow reappears as the microfiber couch dries, liquid has wicked up from the padding or backing. Blot again with plain water, then press dry under a weighted towel so the moisture moves into the towel instead of back to the surface.
Tannin and dye shadows can darken as they oxidise in air. If a faint mark is still there when dry, repeat the colour-lifting step rather than scrubbing.
06 What ink is made of
- Dye
- Oil and fat
- Polymer
Ink carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
The oily part of ink will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
Ink is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
- Ballpoint ink is dye dissolved in an oily, glycol-based paste. Water barely touches it; alcohol, which dissolves both, lifts it.
- The old hairspray trick worked because hairspray used to be mostly alcohol. Today's formulas add resins and oils that can leave a second stain.
- Put a paper towel under the stain and dab from above: the ink transfers into the towel instead of spreading sideways.
07 The material: microfiber couch
A microfiber couch should not get wet at all if you can help it: work with solvents, powders and brushes.
No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
- Microfiber describes fibre size, not a cleaning code. Solvents and water-based cleaners can each damage some upholstery dyes, backing or finishes.
- Brushing microfiber with a white scrub brush after cleaning lifts the nap so the cleaned spot matches the rest.
The microfiber couch file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Check shirt pockets for pens before every wash: one leaking pen can mark a whole load.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on ink on a microfiber couch?
Keep it cool: microfiber couch itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with ink on a microfiber couch?
It is not needed for ink. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; ink responds better to rubbing alcohol and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on ink?
Not chlorine bleach on microfiber couch: it permanently bleaches upholstery and weakens the fibres.
Will ink come out of a microfiber couch completely?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
When should I call a professional?
Code X microfiber, or large water rings that already show.
What if it has already dried?
Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting. Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
