How to get bleach spots out of jeans

Rinse out fresh bleach; re-colour or disguise. Never vinegar or ammonia or mixing bleach. On jeans this is damage rather than a stain, so the goal is limiting it.

01 The short answer

To get bleach spots out of jeans, work in this order: (1) rinse out fresh bleach; (2) re-colour or disguise.

Honest answer: bleach spots cannot be fully reversed, because the colour or fibre is gone rather than covered. The steps limit the damage and make it less visible.

02 Never do this

  • Vinegar or ammonia to neutralise it. Both react with bleach and release toxic gas.
  • Mixing bleach with other cleaners. Bleach with vinegar, ammonia or acidic cleaners releases toxic gas.

03 Before you start

  • Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into jeans.
  • Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
  • Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.

04 The method

  1. Rinse out fresh bleach

If it just happened, rinse the area with plenty of cold water to stop the spot spreading. Do not add vinegar, ammonia or any other cleaner.

Why it works: Acids and ammonia react with bleach and release toxic gas; water simply dilutes it.

  2. Re-colour or disguise

Small spots can be filled with a fabric marker matched to the colour. For denim, a navy or indigo fabric dye evens it out; on towels and sheets, some people embrace it and bleach the rest evenly.

Why it works: A bleach spot is missing colour, so it can only be re-dyed or matched.

05 Dried, set, or back again?

Honest answer: bleach spots cannot be fully reversed, because the colour or fibre is gone rather than covered. The steps limit the damage and make it less visible.

Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.

06 What bleach spots is made of

  • Fibre or dye damage

Bleach spots are not something added to the material. They are colour or fibre taken away, so the realistic goals are stopping it spreading and disguising what is left.

  • Bleach does not add a stain, it removes colour. A bleach spot cannot be cleaned away, only re-coloured, disguised or made even.
  • Rinse fresh bleach out with plenty of water to stop the spot growing, but never neutralise it with vinegar or any other acid: that releases chlorine gas.

07 The material: jeans

Soaking is allowed, which gives enzymes and oxygen bleach time to work without scrubbing.

Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.

  • Indigo sits on the surface of denim fibres rather than soaking in, which is why denim fades and why bleaching agents leave obvious pale patches.
  • Washing jeans inside out in cold water keeps both the colour and the stain treatment where you want them.

The jeans file rates every common cleaner for it.

08 Next time

Wear protective clothing and follow the bleach and washer instructions for the correct dispenser, dilution and timing. Do not apply concentrated bleach to fabric or mix it with other cleaners.

09 Questions

Can I use hot water on bleach spots on jeans?

Keep it cool: jeans itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.

Does vinegar help with bleach spots on jeans?

It is not needed for bleach spots. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; bleach spots responds better to the steps above.

Can I use bleach on bleach spots?

Not chlorine bleach on jeans: it strips indigo and leaves an orange-white patch on denim.

Will bleach spots come out of jeans completely?

Honest answer: bleach spots cannot be fully reversed, because the colour or fibre is gone rather than covered. The steps limit the damage and make it less visible.
