How to get nail polish out of jeans
Scrape off the excess; acetone, blotted; work in dish soap. Never rubbing or acetone on acetate. A tough one on jeans: expect more than one round.

01 The short answer
To get nail polish out of jeans, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) acetone, blotted; (3) work in dish soap. Test acetone on a hidden spot first. Wash inside out in cold water.
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
02 Never do this
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
- Acetone on acetate or triacetate. It dissolves the fabric itself, leaving a hole.
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into jeans.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Acetone: highly flammable; ventilate.
- Acetone: it dissolves acetate and triacetate fabric (common in linings and evening wear) and many plastics.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the jeans, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Acetone, blotted
First check the fibre content of the outer fabric, lining and trims: do not use acetone on acetate, triacetate, modacrylic or an unidentified component. Stop if a hidden-area test changes the colour or finish. Ventilate and keep away from flames and heat. If the fabric and product instructions permit acetone, support the stain on an absorbent pad, apply a small amount with a suitable applicator and blot. Do not pour it onto the garment.
Why it works: Acetone can dissolve conventional nail-polish binders, but it can also remove dyes and dissolve some garment components.
6 min hands-on
Work in dish soap
Work a few drops of clear dish soap into both sides of the stain with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rinse with water as warm as the care label allows, up to 30 °C (86 °F).
Why it works: Dish soap surrounds the oily part of the stain so water can carry it away; warm water helps fat dissolve.
3 min hands-on · 10 min waiting
Wash cold, inside out
Wash inside out in cold water. Check the spot before it goes anywhere near a dryer; air-dry it if any trace remains, because heat sets what is left.
Why it works: Cold water and inside-out washing protect indigo while removing the treatment.
2 min hands-on
Test first: acetone on jeans. Rub a damp white cloth inside the waistband: if it turns blue, the indigo is loose and any bleach will leave a pale patch.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What nail polish is made of
- Polymer
- Pigment particles
- Dye
Nail polish is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
Nail polish can contain pigment particles that do not dissolve readily in water. Many must be lifted with an appropriate cleaner rather than relying on bleach. Avoid grinding particles into the material; pigment chemistry and product formulas vary.
Nail polish carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Nail polish is nitrocellulose, the same family of material as early cinema film, dissolved in solvents. Only a solvent such as acetone can dissolve it again.
- Acetone also dissolves acetate fabric, so a polish spill on a "satin" lining can become a hole. Check the label before you dab.
- Blot wet polish, never wipe it: wiping stretches a dot into a long smear.
07 The material: jeans
Soaking is allowed, which gives enzymes and oxygen bleach time to work without scrubbing.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Indigo sits on the surface of denim fibres rather than soaking in, which is why denim fades and why bleaching agents leave obvious pale patches.
- Washing jeans inside out in cold water keeps both the colour and the stain treatment where you want them.
The jeans file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Paint nails on a folded towel over a hard tray, away from rugs and upholstery, and keep the bottle on a flat, stable surface.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on nail polish on jeans?
Keep it cool: jeans itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with nail polish on jeans?
It is not needed for nail polish. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; nail polish responds better to acetone and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on nail polish?
Not chlorine bleach on jeans: it strips indigo and leaves an orange-white patch on denim.
Will nail polish come out of jeans completely?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
When should I call a professional?
Raw or selvedge denim you are fading on purpose.
