01 The short answer
To get rust out of marble, work in this order: (1) call a stone specialist. On marble, skip lemon, vinegar or rust removers: every common rust remover is an acid, and acids etch marble. Rinse with clean water, dry with a soft cloth, and look at the spot from an angle.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- Lemon, vinegar or rust removers. Every common rust remover is an acid, and acids etch marble.
- Chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach can worsen rust-related marks. Use a compatible product labelled for the actual stain and material.
- Vinegar, lemon or acidic cleaners. They dissolve calcium carbonate and etch dull marks into marble.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into marble.
- Identify the stone and finish. Water absorption does not by itself establish sealer failure or a need to reseal; ask the stone or sealer supplier.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Call a stone specialist
Rust in marble needs a non-acidic rust poultice from a stone supplier, or a stone restorer. Do not try lemon, vinegar or bathroom rust removers.
Why it works: Every household rust remover is an acid, and acids etch marble.
Rinse, dry, check
Rinse with clean water, dry with a soft cloth, and look at the spot from an angle. A dull patch is etching, which needs marble polishing powder, not more cleaning. Ask the stone supplier whether sealing is needed; a quick water-darkening test does not establish sealer failure.
Why it works: Sealed stone resists the next spill; a dull patch tells you the polish needs attention.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A stain that has been in stone for weeks needs a poultice, sometimes two or three applications 24–48 hours each.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What rust is made of
- Minerals and metal
Rust may leave inorganic salts or mineral residue. Treatment depends on the actual deposit and surface; not every mineral dissolves in a mild acid, and acids damage calcareous stone.
- Rust stains involve iron oxides or related corrosion products. Do not use chlorine bleach; choose only a rust remover labelled for the actual fabric or surface.
- Rust stains on laundry usually come from a chipped washer drum, metal hangers or old pipes, not from the clothes.
07 The material: marble
It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.
What this file leaves out because of the material:
- Lemon, vinegar or rust removers. Every common rust remover is an acid, and acids etch marble.
- Marble is calcium carbonate, which acids dissolve: lemon, vinegar, wine, tomato and many bathroom cleaners leave dull etch marks.
- An etch is damage to the surface, not a stain: it looks dull or whitish and no stain remover will fix it. A stain is darker and sits inside the stone.
The marble file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Check washer drums for chips, avoid metal hangers for damp clothes, and do not leave tins or cast iron sitting on stone counters.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on rust on marble?
Warm water helps here once the first steps are done; stay within the care label (up to 60 °C (140 °F)) and check the stain has gone before any dryer.
Does vinegar help with rust on marble?
Keep vinegar away from marble. Acid dissolves calcium carbonate, so vinegar etches dull spots into marble, limestone and travertine.
Can I use bleach on rust?
Not chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach can worsen rust-related marks. Use a compatible product labelled for the actual stain and material.
Will rust come out of marble completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Etching larger than a coin, honed (matte) marble you want polished, and rust stains.
