01 The short answer

To get salad dressing out of granite, work in this order: (1) draw out the oil; (2) poultice the oil out. The key measure: baking-soda poultice, 24–48 h. Rinse with clean water, dry with a soft cloth, and look at the spot from an angle.

This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.

02 Never do this

  • Vinegar or lemon as everyday cleaners. Repeated acid wears down the sealer that keeps the next spill out.

03 Before you start

  • Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into granite.
  • Identify the stone and finish. Water absorption does not by itself establish sealer failure or a need to reseal; ask the stone or sealer supplier.
  • Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
  • The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.

04 The method

  1. Draw out the oil

Cover the stain completely with cornstarch (or baking soda or talc) and leave it for several hours, ideally overnight. Brush or vacuum it off, and repeat while the powder still comes up darker.

Why it works: Fine powder pulls fresh oil out of the granite by capillary action, like a wick. It is the gentlest way to remove the bulk of the oil.

  2. Poultice the oil out

Wash the surface with a few drops of dish soap in warm water first. If a dark patch remains, it has soaked in: mix baking soda with water (or acetone, for stubborn oil in dark granite) into a paste like peanut butter, spread it 6 mm (¼ in) thick over the stain, cover with plastic wrap, tape the edges, poke a few holes, and leave it 24–48 hours. Scrape off with plastic, rinse and dry.

Why it works: A poultice draws oil out of porous stone as it dries, the only way to reach a stain that is inside the stone.

  3. Rinse, dry, check

Rinse with clean water, dry with a soft cloth, and look at the spot from an angle. Ask the stone supplier whether sealing is needed; a quick water-darkening test does not establish sealer failure.

Why it works: Sealed stone resists the next spill; a dull patch tells you the polish needs attention.

05 Dried, set, or back again?

  • Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
  • A stain that has been in stone for weeks needs a poultice, sometimes two or three applications 24–48 hours each.

Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.

06 What salad dressing is made of

  • Oil and fat
  • Pigment particles
  • Sugar

The oily part of salad dressing will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.

Salad dressing can contain pigment particles that do not dissolve readily in water. Many must be lifted with an appropriate cleaner rather than relying on bleach. Avoid grinding particles into the material; pigment chemistry and product formulas vary.

There is sugar in salad dressing. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.

  • Vinaigrette is roughly three parts oil to one part vinegar: the oil does the staining, and on marble the vinegar does the etching.
  • Creamy dressings add egg and dairy protein, so give them a cold rinse before the dish soap.

07 The material: granite

It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.

  • Granite is mostly quartz and feldspar, so it shrugs off acids far better than marble, but its sealer does not.
  • Oil stains in light granite show as dark, blotchy patches; an acetone or baking-soda poultice draws them out.

The granite file rates every common cleaner for it.

08 Next time

Dress salad in the kitchen rather than at the table, and keep cornstarch handy for oil splashes on clothes.

09 Questions

Can I use hot water on salad dressing on granite?

Warm water helps here once the first steps are done; stay within the care label (up to 60 °C (140 °F)) and check the stain has gone before any dryer.

Does vinegar help with salad dressing on granite?

Keep vinegar away from granite. Repeated acid wears down granite sealer, and some granites contain calcite that etches.

Can I use bleach on salad dressing?

Not chlorine bleach on granite: repeated bleach can degrade the sealer on granite.

Will salad dressing come out of granite completely?

This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.

When should I call a professional?

Rust stains, large oil stains in light granite, and resealing.
