Can you use baking soda on a wool rug?
Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume baking soda is permitted on a wool rug; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Mildly alkaline; rinse it out of wool completely.

- Test first Mildly alkaline; rinse it out of wool completely.
02 Why: the two sides
Wool rug
A wool rug has a pile: cut or looped fibre ends standing up from a backing, which hides how far liquid has spread.
A wool rug cannot be rinsed through, so whatever you put on it partly stays in it.
A wool rug is made of keratin, the same protein as hair, so it reacts to alkalis, oxidisers and protein-digesting enzymes the way hair does.
Baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate: a mild alkali, a gentle abrasive and an odour absorber. pH 8.3.
03 How to use it on a wool rug
On a wool rug, the files use it like this (urine, step 5, "baking soda, then vacuum"): Once completely dry, sprinkle baking soda over the area, leave it a few hours (overnight on a mattress) and vacuum.
- Use as little liquid as possible on a wool rug: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
- No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
- No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
- Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.

06 What the wool rug files use most
Across the 38 stain files for a wool rug, these are the products the methods rely on most; baking soda is not among the top five.
07 More about baking soda
Alkalis break down fats and acidic soils and help detergents work. Strong alkalis damage protein fibres such as wool and silk, and can dull stone and wood finishes.
On an ingredient list, baking soda shows up as sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate.
08 What to watch for
Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Rinse immediately and thoroughly in cool water. If the area feels harsh, thin or looks yellow, the fibre itself is damaged; a specialist cleaner may be able to even out the colour, but weakened fibre cannot be restored.
09 Questions
Is diluted baking soda safe on a wool rug?
Yes. Dry, to absorb oil and odours (then vacuum); as a paste with a little water or hydrogen peroxide for scrubbing and poultices.
What should I use on a wool rug instead of baking soda?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on wool rug the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix baking soda with other cleaners on a wool rug?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.
Does baking soda remove stains from a wool rug?
It appears in generated files for urine and vomit. This count is not experimental evidence of effectiveness or permission to use it on the actual item.
How long can baking soda stay on a wool rug?
There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
