02 Why: the two sides
Wool rug
A wool rug has a pile: cut or looped fibre ends standing up from a backing, which hides how far liquid has spread.
A wool rug cannot be rinsed through, so whatever you put on it partly stays in it.
A wool rug is made of keratin, the same protein as hair, so it reacts to alkalis, oxidisers and protein-digesting enzymes the way hair does.
Hydrogen peroxide 3%
The 3% solution sold in brown bottles at pharmacies. A mild oxidising bleach. pH 4–5.
It can bleach dyes, so test colours first.

05 What the wool rug files use most
Across the 38 stain files for a wool rug, these are the products the methods rely on most; hydrogen peroxide is not among the top five.
06 More about hydrogen peroxide
Oxidisers break the chemical bonds that make many stains coloured, so the stain stops absorbing light even if some residue remains. They work on tannins, dyes and plant pigments, not on grease or mineral particles.
On an ingredient list, hydrogen peroxide shows up as hydrogen peroxide (also in many "oxy" sprays).
- It can bleach dyes, so test colours first.
- Do not mix with vinegar, chlorine bleach or other cleaning products. The vinegar restriction is not limited to closed containers.
Never mix it with chlorine bleach, white vinegar and acetone. Why.
07 Already used it?
Rinse immediately and thoroughly in cool water. If the area feels harsh, thin or looks yellow, the fibre itself is damaged; a specialist cleaner may be able to even out the colour, but weakened fibre cannot be restored.
08 Questions
Is diluted hydrogen peroxide safe on a wool rug?
Diluted is less risky, but the problem is the chemistry, not the strength: professional peroxide spotting is not a universal home method for wool or silk. Use a product explicitly approved for the garment or consult a specialist.
What should I use on a wool rug instead of hydrogen peroxide?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on wool rug the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix hydrogen peroxide with other cleaners on a wool rug?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.
Does hydrogen peroxide remove stains from a wool rug?
None of the 38 files for wool rug uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.
How long can hydrogen peroxide stay on a wool rug?
Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
