- Avoid Not recommended as a home laundry stain treatment; use a fabric-labelled pretreatment instead.
02 Why: the two sides
Polyester
It is machine- or hand-washable, so treatments can be rinsed out properly.
The fibre in polyester is synthetic (polyester, nylon or similar): tough against most chemicals, but sensitive to heat and solvents, and it holds oily stains tightly.
It is oleophilic, so it holds onto oils more strongly than water.
WD-40
A petroleum-based lubricant and water-displacing spray. pH n/a.
It is an oil: it leaves an oily stain of its own on fabric and porous surfaces.
03 Use instead
Follow the stain file for the specific stain on polyester; each one picks the safe product for that combination.

06 More about WD-40
Solvents dissolve what water cannot: inks, resins, waxes, adhesives, nail polish and some oils. Each solvent dissolves particular materials, which is also why each one can damage particular surfaces.
On an ingredient list, WD-40 shows up as petroleum distillates (aliphatic hydrocarbons).
- It is an oil: it leaves an oily stain of its own on fabric and porous surfaces.
- Flammable.
07 Already used it?
Rinse it out at once. If colour has already lifted, the dye is gone from that spot; small spots can be filled with a fabric marker, larger ones re-dyed.
08 Questions
Is diluted WD-40 safe on polyester?
Diluted is less risky, but the problem is the chemistry, not the strength: not recommended as a home laundry stain treatment; use a fabric-labelled pretreatment instead.
What should I use on polyester instead of WD-40?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on polyester the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix WD-40 with other cleaners on polyester?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.
Does WD-40 remove stains from polyester?
None of the 41 files for polyester uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.
How long can WD-40 stay on polyester?
Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
