Can you use ammonia on polyester?

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume ammonia is permitted on polyester; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Alkalis can change some dyes; test a seam.

01 The verdict

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume ammonia is permitted on polyester; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety.

02 Why: the two sides

Polyester

It is machine- or hand-washable, so treatments can be rinsed out properly.

The fibre in polyester is synthetic (polyester, nylon or similar): tough against most chemicals, but sensitive to heat and solvents, and it holds oily stains tightly.

It is oleophilic, so it holds onto oils more strongly than water.

Household ammonia

Clear household ammonia, about 5–10% ammonium hydroxide. Used very diluted. pH 11–12.

Never mix with chlorine bleach: it releases toxic chloramine gas.

03 How to use it on polyester

General directions: About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

  • Soaking is allowed, which gives enzymes and oxygen bleach time to work without scrubbing.

05 What the polyester files use most

Across the 41 stain files for polyester, these are the products the methods rely on most; ammonia is not among the top five.

06 More about ammonia

Alkalis break down fats and acidic soils and help detergents work. Strong alkalis damage protein fibres such as wool and silk, and can dull stone and wood finishes.

On an ingredient list, ammonia shows up as ammonium hydroxide, ammonia or "ammonia D".

  • Its smell is close to urine and can draw pets back to the same spot.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach. Why.

07 What to watch for

Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Rinse it out at once. If colour has already lifted, the dye is gone from that spot; small spots can be filled with a fabric marker, larger ones re-dyed.

08 Questions

Is diluted ammonia safe on polyester?

Yes. About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

What should I use on polyester instead of ammonia?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on polyester the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix ammonia with other cleaners on polyester?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does ammonia remove stains from polyester?

None of the 41 files for polyester uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can ammonia stay on polyester?

There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
