01 The short answer
To get beetroot out of a wood table, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) wipe with cold water; (3) wipe with soapy cloth. Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
- Leaving liquid to stand. Moisture that sits on a finish turns into a white ring, then a black one.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a wood table.
- Identify the finish before treatment. Ring colour is only a clue, not a reliable diagnosis of damage depth.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any solids or excess with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the wood table, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Wipe with cold water
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.
Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.
2 min hands-on
Wipe with soapy cloth
Wipe with a cloth wrung almost dry in warm water with a drop of dish soap, following the grain. Dry immediately.
Why it works: The finish keeps most stains on top; a damp cloth cleans it without soaking.

Dry and polish
Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Why it works: Moisture left on a finish turns into a white ring.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What beetroot is made of
- Dye
- Sugar
Beetroot carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
There is sugar in beetroot. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.
- Beet colour is betanin, a water-soluble pigment that is surprisingly fragile: light, heat and oxygen all break it down.
- That fragility helps: acted on before it dries, beet usually rinses out of cotton better than its intensity suggests.
07 The material: wood furniture and floors
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- White rings are moisture trapped in the finish and usually come out with gentle heat; black rings mean water reached the wood itself and reacted with its tannins.
- Shellac and some lacquers dissolve in alcohol, which is why a spilled cocktail can leave a cloudy, sticky patch on old furniture.
The wood furniture and floors file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Handle cooked beetroot on a plate or glass board, and rinse any juice off fabric before it dries.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on beetroot on a wood table?
Keep it cool: wood table itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with beetroot on a wood table?
It is not needed for beetroot. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; beetroot responds better to dish soap.
Can I use bleach on beetroot?
Not chlorine bleach on wood table: it bleaches wood and can damage the finish.
Will beetroot come out of a wood table completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Black water or urine stains that have gone into the wood, antiques, and French-polished (shellac) furniture.
