01 The short answer

To get orange juice out of a wood table, work in this order: (1) wipe it up now; (2) wipe with cold water. Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

02 Never do this

  • Hot water. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer.
  • Ironing over it. Heat browns leftover sugar and melts wax deeper into the fibres.
  • Leaving liquid to stand. Moisture that sits on a finish turns into a white ring, then a black one.

03 Before you start

  • Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a wood table.
  • Identify the finish before treatment. Ring colour is only a clue, not a reliable diagnosis of damage depth.
  • Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.

04 The method

  1. Wipe it up now

Wipe the spill up immediately with a paper towel. Do not leave any liquid standing on the finish.

Why it works: Most surface stains are only stains if they get time to soak in or dry on.

  2. Wipe with cold water

Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.

Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.

  3. Dry and polish

Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.

Why it works: Moisture left on a finish turns into a white ring.

05 Dried, set, or back again?

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

Sticky sugar residue left behind catches dirt, so a "cleaned" spot can turn grey within days. A final rinse or blot with plain water prevents it.

06 What orange juice is made of

  • Sugar
  • Oil-soluble pigment
  • Tannin

There is sugar in orange juice. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.

Its colour comes from carotenoid-type pigments that dissolve in fat, not water. Rinsing moves the sauce but not the colour; dish soap and, where the material allows, sunlight do that.

The tannins in orange juice are plant polyphenols that grip fibres, the same chemistry used to tan leather. They lift in cool, slightly acidic, soapy water. Alkaline bar soap and heat set them.

  • Juice can dry invisible on white fabric and turn yellow-brown weeks later as its sugars slowly brown; an iron or a hot dryer does the same in seconds.
  • Citric acid in orange juice etches marble just as lemon does.

07 The material: wood furniture and floors

No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.

Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.

  • White rings are moisture trapped in the finish and usually come out with gentle heat; black rings mean water reached the wood itself and reacted with its tannins.
  • Shellac and some lacquers dissolve in alcohol, which is why a spilled cocktail can leave a cloudy, sticky patch on old furniture.

The wood furniture and floors file rates every common cleaner for it.

08 Next time

Juice that dries invisible turns brown later: rinse any splash in cold water before ironing or tumble-drying, even when you cannot see it.

09 Questions

Can I use hot water on orange juice on a wood table?

No. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.

Does vinegar help with orange juice on a wood table?

It is not needed for orange juice. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; orange juice responds better to the steps above.

Can I use bleach on orange juice?

Not chlorine bleach on wood table: it bleaches wood and can damage the finish.

Will orange juice come out of a wood table completely?

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

When should I call a professional?

Black water or urine stains that have gone into the wood, antiques, and French-polished (shellac) furniture.
