01 The short answer
To get butter out of rayon, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) draw out the oil; (3) delicate fabric: approved care only. The key measure: cornstarch on it, 15–30 min, brush off. Rinse in cool water, press out water in a towel (no wringing), and reshape to dry flat.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. Rayon and viscose is weak when wet; rubbing breaks fibres and leaves a pale, fuzzy patch.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into rayon.
- If the label says dry clean only, do not use this home washing method: take it to a professional. For washable delicates, use a product specifically labelled for the fabric.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any solids or excess with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the rayon, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.

Draw out the oil
Cover the stain completely with cornstarch (or baking soda or talc) and leave it 15–30 minutes. Brush or vacuum it off, and repeat while the powder still comes up darker.
Why it works: Fine powder pulls fresh oil out of the rayon by capillary action, like a wick. It is the gentlest way to remove the bulk of the oil.

Delicate fabric: approved care only
Only if the item care label permits washing: use a detergent explicitly labelled for this fabric at its stated dilution, temperature and contact time. Handle gently and rinse as directed. Do not substitute ordinary enzyme detergent or extend soaking to chase a persistent mark; consult a professional if a compatible gentle wash does not work.
Why it works: Generic home recipes do not establish compatibility with delicate fibres, dyes, linings or finishes.
Rinse and dry flat
Rinse in cool water, press out water in a towel (no wringing), and reshape to dry flat.
Why it works: Rayon stretches and shrinks when handled wet.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
Oil is often invisible on damp fabric and shows again once dry. Check in daylight after air-drying and repeat the degreasing step before any heat.
06 What butter is made of
- Oil and fat
- Protein
The oily part of butter will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
Butter can include protein. Heat can make protein-containing stains harder to remove. On washable materials, cool water is a common first step. A protein-digesting detergent is an option only when its label permits the actual fabric; use a suitable delicate-fabric detergent on wool or silk.
- Butter is about 80% fat plus milk solids; the fat is the part that stains.
- Scrape butter while it is still cold and firm; melted butter wicks much further into fibres.
07 The material: rayon and viscose
Rayon can be wetted, but gently: dab, swish and press, never wring or scrub.
No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
Soak only if the care label permits it and only for the product-labelled contact time; support the item when lifting it and avoid wringing.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Rayon is regenerated cellulose, not protein. Wet strength varies by fibre type and treatment; conventional viscose can weaken when wet, so avoid wringing and follow the care label.
- Some viscose fabrics shrink or distort during washing and drying. Modified rayon fibres such as modal and lyocell can behave differently.
The rayon and viscose file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Let butter firm up before scraping it off fabric; melted butter spreads much further.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on butter on rayon?
Keep it cool: rayon itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with butter on rayon?
It is not needed for butter. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; butter responds better to cornstarch and enzyme-free wool wash.
Can I use bleach on butter?
Not chlorine bleach on rayon: it strips colour from dyed fabric.
Will butter come out of rayon completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Structured garments and anything dry clean only.
What if it has already dried or been through the dryer?
Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
