01 What it is

The fibre in rayon is cellulose (plant fibre such as cotton, linen or viscose), which tolerates most household cleaners, warm water and enzymes.

The fibre loses much of its strength when wet, so rubbing or wringing damages it.

It is delicate: short contact times and gentle handling matter as much as the product.

Its dyes are the limiting factor: anything that oxidises or strips colour must be tested first.

02 House rules

  • Rayon can be wetted, but gently: dab, swish and press, never wring or scrub.
  • No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
  • Soak only if the care label permits it and only for the product-labelled contact time; support the item when lifting it and avoid wringing.
  • Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.

03 Field notes

  • Rayon is regenerated cellulose, not protein. Wet strength varies by fibre type and treatment; conventional viscose can weaken when wet, so avoid wringing and follow the care label.
  • Some viscose fabrics shrink or distort during washing and drying. Modified rayon fibres such as modal and lyocell can behave differently.

06 The most common mistakes on rayon

Counted across all 25 stain files for rayon:

  • The dryer before it is gone (24 files). Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
  • Hot water (17 files). Heat can make protein-containing stains harder to remove. Start cool on a washable item and avoid dryer or iron heat while a stain remains.
  • Rubbing or scrubbing (14 files). Rayon and viscose is weak when wet; rubbing breaks fibres and leaves a pale, fuzzy patch.
  • Bar soap or soap flakes (5 files). True soap is alkaline, and alkalis set tannin stains such as wine, coffee, tea and fruit.
  • Chlorine bleach (3 files). Do not assume chlorine bleach is suitable for this stain or material. Follow the care label and product restrictions; it can remove dyes and damage fibres.
  • Ironing over it (2 files). Heat browns leftover sugar and melts wax deeper into the fibres.

07 What the rayon files use most

These are the products the 25 stain files for rayon rely on most. Enzyme-free wool wash leads because surfactants have a water-loving end and an oil-loving end.
