01 The short answer
To get cola out of grout, work in this order: (1) wipe it up now; (2) wipe with cold water; (3) dish soap, no vinegar; (4) oxygen bleach paste. On grout, skip vinegar: acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead. Test oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Rinse and dry.
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
02 Never do this
- Vinegar. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
- Hot water. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into grout.
- Identify the grout and any adjacent stone; use only compatible products. Acid and abrasives can damage grout or tile.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Wipe it up now
Wipe the spill up immediately with a paper towel.
Why it works: Most surface stains are only stains if they get time to soak in or dry on.
1 min hands-on
Wipe with cold water
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.
Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.
2 min hands-on
Dish soap, no vinegar
Wipe or dab with a few drops of dish soap in cool water, rinse with a damp cloth and dry. Leave the vinegar out on grout.
Why it works: Dish soap loosens the tannins without the acid this surface cannot take.
4 min hands-on
Oxygen bleach paste
Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.
Why it works: It whitens porous grout without chlorine fumes or acid that would erode it.
5 min hands-on
Rinse and seal
Rinse and dry. Once fully dry, a grout sealer keeps the next spill on the surface.
Why it works: Sealed grout gives you time to wipe up before a stain soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Test first: oxygen bleach on grout. Coloured grout can lighten under bleaches; test in a corner.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
Sticky sugar residue left behind catches dirt, so a "cleaned" spot can turn grey within days. A final rinse or blot with plain water prevents it.
06 What cola is made of
- Sugar
- Dye
- Tannin
There is sugar in cola. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.
Cola carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
The tannins in cola are plant polyphenols that grip fibres, the same chemistry used to tan leather. They lift in cool, slightly acidic, soapy water. Alkaline bar soap and heat set them.
- Cola's brown is caramel colouring. Once the water evaporates, the sugar left behind turns sticky and, if heated, browns further.
- Cola is acidic enough (around pH 2.5) to etch marble.
- A sticky soda patch on carpet catches dirt, so it often reappears as a grey spot days after it looked clean.
07 The material: tile grout
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.
What this file leaves out because of the material:
- Vinegar. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
- Cement grout is porous and alkaline; acids such as vinegar slowly dissolve it, which is why acid cleaning makes grout lines sink and crumble over the years.
- Oxygen bleach paste whitens grout without the fumes of chlorine, and works on most coloured grouts too.
The tile grout file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Sticky drinks do their damage after drying, so wipe or blot every drip, even the ones that look like water.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on cola on grout?
No. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone, then wash as warm as the care label allows (up to 60 °C (140 °F)).
Does vinegar help with cola on grout?
Keep vinegar away from grout. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
Can I use bleach on cola?
Only on white, bleach-safe cotton and only as a last step, diluted per the label. Oxygen bleach usually does the job without the risks.
Will cola come out of grout completely?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
When should I call a professional?
Cracked or crumbling grout, which needs regrouting, not cleaning.
