01 The short answer
To get hair dye out of grout, work in this order: (1) wipe it up now; (2) wipe with cold water; (3) dish soap, no vinegar; (4) wipe with alcohol; (5) oxygen bleach paste. On grout, skip vinegar: acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead. Test rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Rinse and dry.
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
02 Never do this
- Vinegar. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them.
- Leaving it until morning. Oxidative dyes keep developing for 30 minutes or more.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into grout.
- Identify the grout and any adjacent stone; use only compatible products. Acid and abrasives can damage grout or tile.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Wipe it up now
Wipe the spill up immediately with a paper towel.
Why it works: Most surface stains are only stains if they get time to soak in or dry on.
1 min hands-on
Wipe with cold water
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.
Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.
2 min hands-on
Dish soap, no vinegar
Wipe or dab with a few drops of dish soap in cool water, rinse with a damp cloth and dry. Leave the vinegar out on grout.
Why it works: Dish soap loosens the tannins without the acid this surface cannot take.
4 min hands-on
Wipe with alcohol
Wipe with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad or cloth until the ink lifts, then wipe with a damp cloth and dry.
Why it works: Alcohol dissolves the ink without abrasion.
3 min hands-on
Oxygen bleach paste
Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.
Why it works: It whitens porous grout without chlorine fumes or acid that would erode it.
5 min hands-on
Rinse and seal
Rinse and dry. Once fully dry, a grout sealer keeps the next spill on the surface.
Why it works: Sealed grout gives you time to wipe up before a stain soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Test first: rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on grout. Coloured grout can lighten under bleaches; test in a corner.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What hair dye is made of
- Dye
Hair dye carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Permanent hair dye forms large colour molecules inside the hair shaft by oxidation. On fabric the same reaction runs, so fresh dye comes out far more easily than dye that has had 30 minutes to develop.
- Bright semi-permanent colours (blue, pink, purple) are direct dyes that stain grout and pale counters on contact; wipe splashes immediately.
07 The material: tile grout
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.
What this file leaves out because of the material:
- Vinegar. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
- Cement grout is porous and alkaline; acids such as vinegar slowly dissolve it, which is why acid cleaning makes grout lines sink and crumble over the years.
- Oxygen bleach paste whitens grout without the fumes of chlorine, and works on most coloured grouts too.
The tile grout file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an old towel and gloves, wipe any splash on grout or counters immediately, and apply petroleum jelly along the hairline and on nearby surfaces.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on hair dye on grout?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone, then wash as warm as the care label allows (up to 60 °C (140 °F)).
Does vinegar help with hair dye on grout?
Keep vinegar away from grout. Acid slowly dissolves cement grout and its sealer; use oxygen bleach paste instead.
Can I use bleach on hair dye?
Only on white, bleach-safe cotton and only as a last step, diluted per the label. Oxygen bleach usually does the job without the risks.
Will hair dye come out of grout completely?
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
When should I call a professional?
Cracked or crumbling grout, which needs regrouting, not cleaning. For this stain in particular, a professional cleaner (tell them it is hair dye) has solvents and spotting agents that home kits do not.
