01 The short answer
To get glue out of a couch, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) warm compress; (3) blot with soapy foam. The key measure: warm-water soak, about 45 min. Blot with a cloth barely damp with plain water to rinse, then press dry with a towel.
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
02 Never do this
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It untwists the pile and spreads the stain sideways; press and lift instead.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a couch.
- Find the actual cleaning instructions: W permits suitable water-based spot cleaners; W/S permits suitable water- or solvent-based products; S requires its specified solvent method, preferably professional cleaning; X permits vacuuming or light brushing only. If the code is missing, obtain manufacturer advice before using liquids.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the couch, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Warm compress
Lay a cloth soaked in warm water over the glue for 10–15 minutes, then gently scrape it up with a plastic card and blot.
Why it works: Warm moisture softens PVA so it lets go without scrubbing.

Blot with soapy foam
Mix ¼ teaspoon of clear dish soap in 1 cup (240 ml) of warm water, whisk it until foamy, and dab the foam onto the stain with a white cloth. Blot, repeat until no more transfers, then blot with a cloth dampened in plain water to rinse.
Why it works: Using the foam rather than the water keeps the couch from getting soaked; the soap still lifts the oil.

Rinse, blot, brush
Blot with a cloth barely damp with plain water to rinse, then press dry with a towel. Dry quickly with a fan and brush the fabric once dry.
Why it works: Residue and slow drying are what cause rings on upholstery.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- An old stain in carpet or upholstery may have reached the backing or padding. If it keeps coming back as it dries, a professional hot-water extraction is the next step.
If a shadow reappears as the couch dries, liquid has wicked up from the padding or backing. Blot again with plain water, then press dry under a weighted towel so the moisture moves into the towel instead of back to the surface.
06 What glue is made of
- Polymer
Glue is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
- School glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA), which softens in warm water even after it dries. Soaking beats scraping.
- Hot glue is different: it is a thermoplastic, so you freeze it and peel it off.
07 The material: fabric couch
Use as little liquid as possible on a couch: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Upholstery cleaning codes are printed on the tag under the cushions: W, S, W/S or X. Using water on an S fabric leaves a ring.
- Removable cushion covers often should not be machine-washed: they can shrink, and the colour will no longer match the rest of the sofa.
The fabric couch file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Use glue sticks for small children and put craft projects on a wipe-clean mat.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on glue on a couch?
Keep it cool: couch itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with glue on a couch?
It is not needed for glue. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; glue responds better to dish soap.
Can I use bleach on glue?
Not chlorine bleach on couch: it permanently bleaches upholstery and weakens the fibres.
Will glue come out of a couch completely?
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
When should I call a professional?
Code X fabrics, silk or velvet upholstery, and anything with a water stain already showing.
What if it has already dried?
An old stain in carpet or upholstery may have reached the backing or padding. If it keeps coming back as it dries, a professional hot-water extraction is the next step.
