01 The short answer
To get glue out of jeans, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) soak it soft; (3) work in dish soap. The key measure: warm-water soak, about 45 min. Wash inside out in cold water.
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
02 Never do this
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into jeans.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the jeans, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.

Soak it soft
Soak the area in warm water, as warm as the label allows up to 30 °C (86 °F), for 30–60 minutes. The glue turns soft and white again; peel and rub it out.
Why it works: PVA glue softens in warm water even after it has dried.

Work in dish soap
Work a few drops of clear dish soap into both sides of the stain with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rinse with water as warm as the care label allows, up to 30 °C (86 °F).
Why it works: Dish soap surrounds the oily part of the stain so water can carry it away; warm water helps fat dissolve.

Wash cold, inside out
Wash inside out in cold water. Check the spot before it goes anywhere near a dryer; air-dry it if any trace remains, because heat sets what is left.
Why it works: Cold water and inside-out washing protect indigo while removing the treatment.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What glue is made of
- Polymer
Glue is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
- School glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA), which softens in warm water even after it dries. Soaking beats scraping.
- Hot glue is different: it is a thermoplastic, so you freeze it and peel it off.
07 The material: jeans
Soaking is allowed, which gives enzymes and oxygen bleach time to work without scrubbing.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Indigo sits on the surface of denim fibres rather than soaking in, which is why denim fades and why bleaching agents leave obvious pale patches.
- Washing jeans inside out in cold water keeps both the colour and the stain treatment where you want them.
The jeans file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Use glue sticks for small children and put craft projects on a wipe-clean mat.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on glue on jeans?
Keep it cool: jeans itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with glue on jeans?
It is not needed for glue. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; glue responds better to dish soap and enzyme laundry detergent.
Can I use bleach on glue?
Not chlorine bleach on jeans: it strips indigo and leaves an orange-white patch on denim.
Will glue come out of jeans completely?
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
When should I call a professional?
Raw or selvedge denim you are fading on purpose.
