How to get grape juice out of a mattress
Blot, don't rub; sponge with cold water; soap-and-vinegar blot. Never hot water or bar soap. A tough one on a mattress: expect more than one round.

01 The short answer
To get grape juice out of a mattress, work in this order: (1) blot, don't rub; (2) sponge with cold water; (3) soap-and-vinegar blot; (4) oxygen bleach dab. The key measure: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp vinegar + 2 cups cool water. Test white vinegar and oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Follow the mattress manufacturer drying instructions.
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer.
- Bar soap or soap flakes. True soap is alkaline, and alkalis set tannin stains such as wine, coffee, tea and fruit.
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It untwists the pile and spreads the stain sideways; press and lift instead.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a mattress.
- Test every permitted product on a hidden spot and allow it to dry before checking for colour or texture changes.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Blot, don't rub
Press a thick pad of white paper towels or a folded white towel onto the spill and lift straight up. Swap to a dry section each time it picks up colour. Press straight down; pushing sideways drives the liquid into the cushion. Work from the outside edge towards the centre.
Why it works: Most of the stain is still liquid. Every drop you lift now is one that never reaches the backing, and rubbing untwists and frays the pile.
3 min hands-on
Sponge with cold water
Dampen a white cloth in cold water, press it onto the stain, then blot with a dry cloth. Repeat a few times. Use as little water as you can: a mattress cannot be rinsed, so whatever goes in stays.
Why it works: Cool water dilutes the stain before its colour has time to bond to the mattress.
4 min hands-on
Soap-and-vinegar blot
Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of clear dish soap and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups (480 ml) of cool water. Sponge it onto the stain with a white cloth, leave 5–10 minutes, blot with a dry cloth, then sponge with plain cool water and blot dry.
Why it works: This is the classic tannin spotter: the soap loosens the stain and the mild acid stops tannins from setting and helps lift their colour.

Oxygen bleach dab
Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.
Why it works: Oxygen bleach breaks down the tannins that soap leaves behind, without the damage chlorine would do.
4 min hands-on
Dry it completely
Follow the mattress manufacturer drying instructions. Surface dryness does not prove that foam is dry; do not cover or use a damp mattress. Persistent moisture or contamination needs professional advice.
Why it works: Damp inside a mattress grows mildew.
2 min hands-on
Test first: white vinegar and oxygen bleach on a mattress. Use the least liquid that works: moisture that reaches the foam takes days to dry and can grow mildew.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting.
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
- An old stain in carpet or upholstery may have reached the backing or padding. If it keeps coming back as it dries, a professional hot-water extraction is the next step.
If a shadow reappears as the mattress dries, liquid has wicked up from the padding or backing. Blot again with plain water, then press dry under a weighted towel so the moisture moves into the towel instead of back to the surface.
Sticky sugar residue left behind catches dirt, so a "cleaned" spot can turn grey within days. A final rinse or blot with plain water prevents it.
Tannin and dye shadows can darken as they oxidise in air. If a faint mark is still there when dry, repeat the colour-lifting step rather than scrubbing.
06 What grape juice is made of
- Dye
- Sugar
- Tannin
Grape juice carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
There is sugar in grape juice. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.
The tannins in grape juice are plant polyphenols that grip fibres, the same chemistry used to tan leather. They lift in cool, slightly acidic, soapy water. Alkaline bar soap and heat set them.
- Grape juice is coloured by the same anthocyanins as red wine, with more sugar to glue them down and no alcohol to help dissolve them.
- Anthocyanins are pH-sensitive: rinse with plain cool water before anything alkaline, or the stain may turn blue-grey.
07 The material: mattress
Use as little liquid as possible on a mattress: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- A mattress cannot be rinsed, so every product you put on it stays; that is why the methods use sprays and blotting, not pouring.
- A surface powder is not a substitute for drying contaminated padding or foam. Use manufacturer-approved care; deep moisture or persistent odour needs professional assessment.
The mattress file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Give small children juice in lidded cups away from upholstery, and rinse a spill in cold water before it dries.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on grape juice on a mattress?
No. Hot water helps the colour bond, and leftover sugar browns later under an iron or in a dryer. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with grape juice on a mattress?
Yes, diluted. It is part of the method above: mild acid helps lift tannins, but test it first: no material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional.
Can I use bleach on grape juice?
Not chlorine bleach on mattress: it weakens ticking and foam and leaves fumes in something you sleep on. Oxygen bleach, used as described above, is the gentler option.
Will grape juice come out of a mattress completely?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
When should I call a professional?
Large urine soaks in memory foam and anything under warranty (stains can void it).
What if it has already dried?
Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting. A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
