01 What it is
A mattress can never be rinsed through, and damp foam takes days to dry.
A mattress cannot be rinsed through, so whatever you put on it partly stays in it.
It comes in white and in colours; what is safe on white cotton is not always safe on coloured.
02 House rules
- Use as little liquid as possible on a mattress: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
- No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
- No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
- Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
03 Field notes
- A mattress cannot be rinsed, so every product you put on it stays; that is why the methods use sprays and blotting, not pouring.
- A surface powder is not a substitute for drying contaminated padding or foam. Use manufacturer-approved care; deep moisture or persistent odour needs professional assessment.
- Many mattress warranties are void if there is any stain on the mattress, which is a good argument for a protector.
04 Every cleaner, rated
| Cleaner | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Baking soda | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Borax | Test first | Rinse it out fully; powder residue stiffens pile and attracts dirt. |
| Citrus adhesive remover | Test first | Use sparingly and follow with a dish-soap blot. |
| Cornstarch | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Dish soap | Test first | Keep it to a light, foamy solution and rinse well; soap left in padding attracts dirt. |
| Bio detergent | Test first | Dilute it and rinse thoroughly; detergent left in carpet or upholstery turns into a dirt magnet. |
| Enzyme cleaner | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Household ammonia | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Hydrogen peroxide 3% | Test first | Fine on white cotton; on coloured items it can lighten the dye, so test a hidden spot first. |
| Lemon juice | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Oxalic acid cleanser | Test first | Use a tiny amount and rinse well; acid left in padding keeps working. |
| Oxygen bleach | Test first | Use a weak solution and blot, not a soak, and rinse with a little clean water. |
| Rubbing alcohol | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| White vinegar | Test first | No material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional. |
| Acetone | Avoid | It can dissolve synthetic ticking and foam. |
| Hot water | Avoid | Too much hot water soaks into padding and backing and can bring the stain back as it dries. |
| Steam cleaner | Avoid | It drives moisture deep into foam, which then takes days to dry. |
| Chlorine bleach | Never | It weakens ticking and foam and leaves fumes in something you sleep on. |
| Magic eraser | Never | It pills mattress ticking. |
| WD-40 | Never | An oil stain in a mattress is harder to remove than whatever it was for. |

06 The most common mistakes on mattress
Counted across all 21 stain files for mattress:
- Rubbing or scrubbing (21 files). It untwists the pile and spreads the stain sideways; press and lift instead.
- The dryer before it is gone (18 files). Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Hot water (16 files). Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres, and any milk or other protein in it cooks on.
- Chlorine bleach (4 files). Do not assume chlorine bleach is suitable for this stain or material. Follow the care label and product restrictions; it can remove dyes and damage fibres.
- Bar soap or soap flakes (4 files). True soap is alkaline, and alkalis set tannin stains such as wine, coffee, tea and fruit.
- Mixing bleach with other cleaners (1 file). Bleach with vinegar, ammonia or acidic cleaners releases toxic gas.
07 What the mattress files use most
These are the products the 21 stain files for mattress rely on most. Baking soda leads because alkalis break down fats and acidic soils and help detergents work.
08 When to call a professional
Large urine soaks in memory foam and anything under warranty (stains can void it).
