01 The short answer
To get gravy out of a quartz countertop, work in this order: (1) lift the excess; (2) wipe with cold water; (3) wash with dish soap. Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres, and any milk or other protein in it cooks on.
- Scouring powder or pads. They dull the polished resin surface, and dull spots hold stains.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a quartz countertop.
- Check the exact surface and finish manufacturer's care guide for permitted products.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Lift the excess
Lift any solids or excess with a plastic scraper or an old bank card, never a metal blade on stone. Then wipe the area with a damp paper towel.
Why it works: Removing the bulk first means the cleaner only has to deal with what has soaked in.
2 min hands-on
Wipe with cold water
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.
Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.
2 min hands-on
Wash with dish soap
Wipe with warm water and a drop of dish soap; on a hard surface, enzymes are not needed.
Why it works: Protein residue on a sealed surface lifts with ordinary detergent once it is wet.

Rinse and dry
Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
Why it works: Residue on quartz shows as a dull film.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What gravy is made of
- Oil and fat
- Starch
- Protein
- Dye
The oily part of gravy will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
Starch in gravy swells and glues itself to fibres as it dries. The amylase enzymes in bio detergent are what break it down.
Gravy can include protein. Heat can make protein-containing stains harder to remove. On washable materials, cool water is a common first step. A protein-digesting detergent is an option only when its label permits the actual fabric; use a suitable delicate-fabric detergent on wool or silk.
Gravy carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Gravy is fat, flour or cornstarch, meat protein and browned colour. It needs an enzyme for the starch and protein and a degreaser for the fat, in that order.
- Starch that is ironed before it is washed out goes stiff and shiny.
07 The material: quartz countertop
It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.
- Engineered quartz and related mineral surfaces combine mineral particles with a binder; composition varies by product. Follow the maker instructions for the actual surface and finish.
- The resin is the weak point: hot pans, strong solvents and strong alkalis can discolour it permanently.
The quartz countertop file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Pass gravy in a jug with a saucer underneath, and treat drips with cold water before the starch dries stiff.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on gravy on a quartz countertop?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres, and any milk or other protein in it cooks on. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone, then wash as warm as the care label allows (up to 60 °C (140 °F)).
Does vinegar help with gravy on a quartz countertop?
It is not needed for gravy. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; gravy responds better to dish soap.
Can I use bleach on gravy?
Not chlorine bleach on quartz countertop: quartz makers warn that bleach can discolour the resin.
Will gravy come out of a quartz countertop completely?
This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.
When should I call a professional?
Burn marks from hot pans, which are damage to the resin rather than stains.
