01 The short answer

To get soy sauce out of a quartz countertop, work in this order: (1) wipe it up now; (2) wipe with cold water; (3) soap-and-vinegar sponge; (4) wash with dish soap; (5) brief oxygen wipe. The key measure: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp vinegar + 2 cups cool water. Test white vinegar and oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

02 Never do this

  • Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres, and any milk or other protein in it cooks on.
  • Scouring powder or pads. They dull the polished resin surface, and dull spots hold stains.

03 Before you start

  • Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a quartz countertop.
  • Check the exact surface and finish manufacturer's care guide for permitted products.
  • Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
  • The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.

04 The method

  1. Wipe it up now

Wipe the spill up immediately with a paper towel.

Why it works: Most surface stains are only stains if they get time to soak in or dry on.

    1 min hands-on

  2. Wipe with cold water

Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.

Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.

  3. Soap-and-vinegar sponge

Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of clear dish soap and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups (480 ml) of cool water. Sponge it into the stain, leave 10–15 minutes, then rinse in cool water.

Why it works: Soap loosens the stain; the mild acid keeps tannins from setting and helps lift colour. Bar soap, which is alkaline, would do the opposite.

  4. Wash with dish soap

Wipe with warm water and a drop of dish soap; on a hard surface, enzymes are not needed.

Why it works: Protein residue on a sealed surface lifts with ordinary detergent once it is wet.

    2 min hands-on

  5. Brief oxygen wipe

Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.

Why it works: Quartz resin is non-porous; a short contact is enough to lift surface colour.

    2 min hands-on

  6. Rinse and dry

Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.

Why it works: Residue on quartz shows as a dull film.

    2 min hands-on

Test first: white vinegar and oxygen bleach on a quartz countertop. Check your manufacturer's care guide; most specify pH-neutral cleaners and no strong alkalis or solvents.

05 Dried, set, or back again?

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.

06 What soy sauce is made of

  • Dye
  • Protein
  • Sugar

Soy sauce carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.

Soy sauce can include protein. Heat can make protein-containing stains harder to remove. On washable materials, cool water is a common first step. A protein-digesting detergent is an option only when its label permits the actual fabric; use a suitable delicate-fabric detergent on wool or silk.

There is sugar in soy sauce. It rinses out easily in water, but any left behind turns sticky, catches dirt, and browns into a yellow-brown mark under an iron or in a hot dryer.

  • Soy sauce is dark because of melanoidins, brown pigments formed by the Maillard reaction, the same chemistry that browns toast.
  • It is also salty and protein-rich (fermented soybeans), so start with cold water.

07 The material: quartz countertop

It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.

  • Engineered quartz and related mineral surfaces combine mineral particles with a binder; composition varies by product. Follow the maker instructions for the actual surface and finish.
  • The resin is the weak point: hot pans, strong solvents and strong alkalis can discolour it permanently.

The quartz countertop file rates every common cleaner for it.

08 Next time

Use a small dipping dish instead of pouring soy sauce over food on a light tablecloth.

09 Questions

Can I use hot water on soy sauce on a quartz countertop?

No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres, and any milk or other protein in it cooks on. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone, then wash as warm as the care label allows (up to 60 °C (140 °F)).

Does vinegar help with soy sauce on a quartz countertop?

Yes, diluted. It is part of the method above: mild acid helps lift mineral residue, but test it first: occasional diluted use is usually fine on quartz; do not leave it to sit.

Can I use bleach on soy sauce?

Not chlorine bleach on quartz countertop: quartz makers warn that bleach can discolour the resin. Oxygen bleach, used as described above, is the gentler option.

Will soy sauce come out of a quartz countertop completely?

This has a lower editorial difficulty rating, not a measured success rate. Results depend on the actual fabric, dye, finish and age of the stain.

When should I call a professional?

Burn marks from hot pans, which are damage to the resin rather than stains.
