Permanent marker stains: the dossier

Permanent marker is mostly dye, with polymer. It sets immediately. First move, on almost anything: dissolve it with rubbing alcohol, then work in dish soap.

01 What it is made of

  • Dye
  • Polymer

Permanent marker carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.

Permanent marker is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.

02 Field notes

  • Permanent marker ink is dye dissolved in alcohol with a resin binder. Rubbing alcohol, or alcohol hand sanitizer, redissolves it.
  • On non-porous surfaces, drawing over it with a dry-erase marker and wiping often lifts it: the dry-erase ink's solvent redissolves the permanent ink.

03 The first minute, anywhere

Whatever it landed on: dissolve it with rubbing alcohol, then work in dish soap. It sets immediately, so speed beats strength.

  • Water first. Water spreads alcohol-based ink and does not dissolve it.

05 Step by step: permanent marker on clothes

The most-searched combination for permanent marker. The full file adds the chemistry, the set-in variant and questions.

  1. Alcohol, blotted through

Put a folded paper towel under the stain. Dab rubbing alcohol on from above with a cotton pad; the ink dissolves and transfers into the towel underneath. Keep moving to clean sections of towel and pad until nothing more comes out.

  2. Work in dish soap

Work a few drops of clear dish soap into both sides of the stain with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rinse with water as warm as the care label allows, up to 40 °C (104 °F).

  3. Wash and check

Wash as normal at the warmest temperature the care label allows. Check the spot before it goes anywhere near a dryer; air-dry it if any trace remains, because heat sets what is left.

06 The kit for permanent marker

How often each product appears across the 12 files:

07 Products worth keeping for permanent marker

Rubbing alcohol 12 of 12 files

70% (or 91–99%) isopropyl alcohol. Dissolves many inks, dyes, resins and sap. Dab with a white cloth or cotton pad and blot onto a paper towel underneath; change the towel as the ink transfers. Ventilate; it is flammable.

Dish soap 12 of 12 files

Liquid hand dishwashing detergent: anionic surfactants built to lift grease. A few drops worked in with a fingertip or soft brush, or about ½ tsp in 1 cup (240 ml) of water for blotting. Use a clear, dye-free one on light fabrics.

Enzyme laundry detergent 3 of 12 files

Laundry detergent may contain protease, amylase, lipase or other enzymes; check the actual formulation and fabric restrictions. Pretreat or wash only as the detergent and care labels permit, using the stated dilution and contact time.

08 Why the surface matters

Permanent marker is stubborn on plastic containers and specialist on leather. The difference is handling: Use as little liquid as possible on leather: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.

Across the 12 surfaces on file, 0 rate easy or manageable, 2 stubborn and 10 tough or specialist. Delicate fibres (wool, silk, rayon), anything you cannot rinse (carpet, upholstery, mattresses) and porous stone push the rating up.

09 Also common: permanent marker on leather

  1. Cotton bud of alcohol. Dab rubbing alcohol, blot.
  2. Clean, then dry. Leather cleaner, wipe, dry.
  3. Dry and condition.

10 Prevention

Keep permanent markers out of reach of small children, and put paper under anything you are labelling.

11 Questions

Does hot water set permanent marker?

Not in the way it sets protein stains. Once the first steps are done, warm water within the care label helps rinse it out; still check before any dryer.

Can you use bleach on permanent marker?

Chlorine bleach is a last resort only on white, bleach-safe cotton.

Does vinegar help with permanent marker?

It is not part of any permanent marker method on file; rubbing alcohol and dish soap do more of the work.

How fast does permanent marker set?

It sets immediately. This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
