01 The short answer
To get permanent marker out of a quartz countertop, work in this order: (1) wipe with alcohol; (2) wash with dish soap. Test rubbing alcohol on a hidden spot first. Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- Water first. Water spreads alcohol-based ink and does not dissolve it.
- Scouring powder or pads. They dull the polished resin surface, and dull spots hold stains.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a quartz countertop.
- Check the exact surface and finish manufacturer's care guide for permitted products.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Wipe with alcohol
First try scribbling over the mark with a dry-erase marker and wiping it off straight away. If a trace remains, wipe with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad or cloth until the ink lifts, then wipe with a damp cloth and dry.
Why it works: Alcohol dissolves the ink without abrasion.

Wash with dish soap
Wipe with warm water and a few drops of dish soap on a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge, then rinse and dry.
Why it works: Quartz is non-porous, so oil and pigment sit on top and lift with plain detergent.
3 min hands-on
Rinse and dry
Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
Why it works: Residue on quartz shows as a dull film.
2 min hands-on
Test first: rubbing alcohol on a quartz countertop. Check your manufacturer's care guide; most specify pH-neutral cleaners and no strong alkalis or solvents.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What permanent marker is made of
- Dye
- Polymer
Permanent marker carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
Permanent marker is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
- Permanent marker ink is dye dissolved in alcohol with a resin binder. Rubbing alcohol, or alcohol hand sanitizer, redissolves it.
- On non-porous surfaces, drawing over it with a dry-erase marker and wiping often lifts it: the dry-erase ink's solvent redissolves the permanent ink.
07 The material: quartz countertop
It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.
- Engineered quartz and related mineral surfaces combine mineral particles with a binder; composition varies by product. Follow the maker instructions for the actual surface and finish.
- The resin is the weak point: hot pans, strong solvents and strong alkalis can discolour it permanently.
The quartz countertop file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Keep permanent markers out of reach of small children, and put paper under anything you are labelling.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on permanent marker on a quartz countertop?
Warm water helps here once the first steps are done; stay within the care label (up to 60 °C (140 °F)) and check the stain has gone before any dryer.
Does vinegar help with permanent marker on a quartz countertop?
It is not needed for permanent marker. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; permanent marker responds better to rubbing alcohol and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on permanent marker?
Not chlorine bleach on quartz countertop: quartz makers warn that bleach can discolour the resin.
Will permanent marker come out of a quartz countertop completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Burn marks from hot pans, which are damage to the resin rather than stains.
