06 More about acetone

Solvents dissolve what water cannot: inks, resins, waxes, adhesives, nail polish and some oils. Each solvent dissolves particular materials, which is also why each one can damage particular surfaces.

On an ingredient list, acetone shows up as acetone (non-acetone removers use ethyl acetate).

  • Highly flammable; ventilate.
  • It dissolves acetate and triacetate fabric (common in linings and evening wear) and many plastics.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Why.

07 Already used it?

Rinse with a damp sponge and let it dry. If the paint has softened, lightened or gone shiny, touching up with matching paint is usually less visible than more cleaning.

08 Questions

Is diluted acetone safe on a painted wall?

No. Dilution slows the damage but does not change what acetone does to a painted wall: it dissolves wall paint.

What should I use on a painted wall instead of acetone?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on wall the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix acetone with other cleaners on a painted wall?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does acetone remove stains from a painted wall?

None of the 16 files for wall uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can acetone stay on a painted wall?

Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
