01 The short answer
To get grease out of a painted wall, work in this order: (1) draw out the oil; (2) wash gently. The key measure: cornstarch on it, 15–30 min, brush off. Wipe with a clean damp sponge and pat dry with a soft cloth.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- Scrubbing flat or matte paint. Friction polishes the paint and leaves a shiny patch that shows more than the mark.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a painted wall.
- Follow the paint maker cleaning instructions and test the finish; avoid scrubbing.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Draw out the oil
Cover the stain completely with cornstarch (or baking soda or talc) and leave it 15–30 minutes. Brush or vacuum it off, and repeat while the powder still comes up darker.
Why it works: Fine powder pulls fresh oil out of the wall by capillary action, like a wick. It is the gentlest way to remove the bulk of the oil.

Wash gently
Wash with a soft sponge and a few drops of dish soap in warm water, using light circles. Rinse with a clean damp sponge and pat dry.
Why it works: It removes grease and residue from the paint film without abrasion that would leave a shiny patch.
4 min hands-on
Rinse and blot
Wipe with a clean damp sponge and pat dry with a soft cloth. If a faint mark remains, touch up with matching paint rather than scrubbing.
Why it works: Paint is softened by repeated scrubbing; a touch-up is often less visible.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What grease is made of
- Oil and fat
The oily part of grease will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
- Grease stains look like dark wet patches that never dry because oil fills the gaps between fibres and lets more light through. They add no colour, only translucency.
- Dish soap molecules have one water-loving end and one oil-loving end. They surround each oil droplet so water can carry it away.
- An oil stain can be invisible on wet fabric and reappear once dry; check before the dryer, because heat locks it in.
07 The material: painted walls
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
- On flat and matte paint, scrubbing polishes the surface and leaves a shiny patch, which is often more visible than the original mark.
- Grease on walls darkens slowly as dust sticks to it; dish soap in warm water removes it before it needs repainting.
The painted walls file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an apron when frying, keep a box of cornstarch near the stove, and treat oil marks before the first wash: dryers lock grease in.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on grease on a painted wall?
Warm water helps here once the first steps are done; stay within the care label (up to 40 °C (104 °F)) and check the stain has gone before any dryer.
Does vinegar help with grease on a painted wall?
It is not needed for grease. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; grease responds better to cornstarch and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on grease?
Not chlorine bleach on wall: it leaves bleached patches in coloured paint.
Will grease come out of a painted wall completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Wallpaper, limewash and chalk paints, which need their own methods.
