Can you use ammonia on a microfiber couch?

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume ammonia is permitted on a microfiber couch; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Test first; it can shift dyes.

01 The verdict

02 Why: the two sides

Microfiber couch

Upholstery carries a cleaning code (W, S, W/S or X) on its tag, and that code decides which liquids are safe.

A microfiber couch cannot be rinsed through, so whatever you put on it partly stays in it.

The fibre in a microfiber couch is synthetic (polyester, nylon or similar): tough against most chemicals, but sensitive to heat and solvents, and it holds oily stains tightly.

Household ammonia

Clear household ammonia, about 5–10% ammonium hydroxide. Used very diluted. pH 11–12.

Never mix with chlorine bleach: it releases toxic chloramine gas.

03 How to use it on a microfiber couch

General directions: About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

  • A microfiber couch should not get wet at all if you can help it: work with solvents, powders and brushes.
  • No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
  • No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.

05 What the microfiber couch files use most

Across the 40 stain files for a microfiber couch, these are the products the methods rely on most; ammonia is not among the top five.

06 More about ammonia

Alkalis break down fats and acidic soils and help detergents work. Strong alkalis damage protein fibres such as wool and silk, and can dull stone and wood finishes.

On an ingredient list, ammonia shows up as ammonium hydroxide, ammonia or "ammonia D".

  • Its smell is close to urine and can draw pets back to the same spot.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach. Why.

07 What to watch for

Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Blot with plain water and dry quickly with a fan. Rings or colour loss on upholstery usually need professional cleaning.

08 Questions

Is diluted ammonia safe on a microfiber couch?

Yes. About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

What should I use on a microfiber couch instead of ammonia?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on microfiber couch the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix ammonia with other cleaners on a microfiber couch?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does ammonia remove stains from a microfiber couch?

None of the 40 files for microfiber couch uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can ammonia stay on a microfiber couch?

There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
