Can you use ammonia on velvet?

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume ammonia is permitted on velvet; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Alkalis can change some dyes; test a seam.

01 The verdict

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume ammonia is permitted on velvet; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety.

  • Test first Alkalis can change some dyes; test a seam.
  • Test first An old method for synthetic carpet; never on wool, never on pet urine, and never with bleach.
  • Test first Test first; it can shift dyes.

02 Why: the two sides

Velvet upholstery

Upholstery carries a cleaning code (W, S, W/S or X) on its tag, and that code decides which liquids are safe.

Velvet has a pile: cut or looped fibre ends standing up from a backing, which hides how far liquid has spread.

Velvet has a nap whose look depends on the fibres lying the same way, so pressure and heat leave marks.

Household ammonia

Clear household ammonia, about 5–10% ammonium hydroxide. Used very diluted. pH 11–12.

Never mix with chlorine bleach: it releases toxic chloramine gas.

03 How to use it on velvet

General directions: About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

  • Use as little liquid as possible on velvet: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
  • No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
  • No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
  • Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.

05 What the velvet upholstery files use most

Across the 36 stain files for velvet, these are the products the methods rely on most; ammonia is not among the top five.

06 More about ammonia

Alkalis break down fats and acidic soils and help detergents work. Strong alkalis damage protein fibres such as wool and silk, and can dull stone and wood finishes.

On an ingredient list, ammonia shows up as ammonium hydroxide, ammonia or "ammonia D".

  • Its smell is close to urine and can draw pets back to the same spot.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach. Why.

07 What to watch for

Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Rinse by blotting with plain water. If colour has lifted, carpet dye pens or a professional colour repair can disguise it.

08 Questions

Is diluted ammonia safe on velvet?

Yes. About 1 tbsp (15 ml) in ½ cup (120 ml) of water, dabbed on, then rinsed. Ventilate.

What should I use on velvet instead of ammonia?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on velvet the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix ammonia with other cleaners on velvet?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does ammonia remove stains from velvet?

None of the 36 files for velvet uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can ammonia stay on velvet?

There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
