How to get acrylic paint out of white sneakers
Scrape off the excess; rinse it while it's wet; alcohol, blotted through. Never the dryer or hot water. A tough one on white sneakers: expect more than one round.

01 The short answer
To get acrylic paint out of white sneakers, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) rinse it while it's wet; (3) alcohol, blotted through. Test rubbing alcohol on a hidden spot first. Wash in a laundry bag on a cool cycle (or hand-wash), then stuff with paper and air-dry out of direct sun.
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
02 Never do this
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into white sneakers.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any solids or excess with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the white sneakers, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.

Rinse it while it's wet
If it is still wet, flush it from the back with cool water and work in dish soap until the water runs clear. Do not let it dry. If it already has, go to the next step.
Why it works: Wet acrylic and latex rinse out; dry ones do not.

Alcohol, blotted through
Put a folded paper towel under the stain. Dab rubbing alcohol on from above with a cotton pad; the residue dissolves and transfers into the towel underneath. Keep moving to clean sections of towel and pad until nothing more comes out.
Why it works: Acrylic paint is soluble in alcohol, not water. Blotting through pushes it out of the fabric instead of spreading it sideways.

Wash cool, air-dry
Wash in a laundry bag on a cool cycle (or hand-wash), then stuff with paper and air-dry out of direct sun. Never use the dryer.
Why it works: Heat melts sneaker glue, and drying in sun can leave yellow detergent halos.
2 min hands-on
Test first: rubbing alcohol on white sneakers. Check that the shoe is canvas, not leather or knit with glued panels, before any soaking.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What acrylic paint is made of
- Polymer
- Pigment particles
Acrylic paint is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
Acrylic paint can contain pigment particles that do not dissolve readily in water. Many must be lifted with an appropriate cleaner rather than relying on bleach. Avoid grinding particles into the material; pigment chemistry and product formulas vary.
- Acrylic paint is pigment in an acrylic polymer emulsion. Wet, it rinses out with water; once dry, the polymer particles fuse into a plastic film that water cannot touch.
- Rubbing alcohol softens dried acrylic enough to scrape and wash it out; that is how artists clean dried brushes.
07 The material: white sneakers
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Chlorine bleach yellows the rubber and the synthetic parts of sneakers, and the glue. Oxygen bleach is the whitener to use.
- Yellow halos after washing white canvas are often detergent residue that oxidised in the sun: rinse thoroughly and dry in shade.
The white sneakers file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an old shirt, cover tables with newspaper, and rinse brushes and spills while the paint is still wet.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on acrylic paint on white sneakers?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with acrylic paint on white sneakers?
It is not needed for acrylic paint. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; acrylic paint responds better to dish soap and rubbing alcohol.
Can I use bleach on acrylic paint?
Not chlorine bleach on white sneakers: it yellows rubber soles and the glue and synthetic parts of sneakers.
Will acrylic paint come out of white sneakers completely?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
When should I call a professional?
Leather, suede or designer sneakers.
