01 The short answer
To get grease out of white sneakers, work in this order: (1) draw out the oil; (2) work in dish soap. The key measure: cornstarch on it, 15–30 min, brush off. Wash in a laundry bag on a cool cycle (or hand-wash), then stuff with paper and air-dry out of direct sun.
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
02 Never do this
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into white sneakers.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Draw out the oil
Cover the stain completely with cornstarch (or baking soda or talc) and leave it 15–30 minutes. Brush or vacuum it off, and repeat while the powder still comes up darker.
Why it works: Fine powder pulls fresh oil out of the white sneakers by capillary action, like a wick. It is the gentlest way to remove the bulk of the oil.

Work in dish soap
Work a few drops of clear dish soap into both sides of the stain with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rinse with water as warm as the care label allows, up to 30 °C (86 °F).
Why it works: Dish soap surrounds the oil so water can carry it away; warm water helps fat dissolve.

Wash cool, air-dry
Wash in a laundry bag on a cool cycle (or hand-wash), then stuff with paper and air-dry out of direct sun. Never use the dryer.
Why it works: Heat melts sneaker glue, and drying in sun can leave yellow detergent halos.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
Oil is often invisible on damp fabric and shows again once dry. Check in daylight after air-drying and repeat the degreasing step before any heat.
06 What grease is made of
- Oil and fat
The oily part of grease will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
- Grease stains look like dark wet patches that never dry because oil fills the gaps between fibres and lets more light through. They add no colour, only translucency.
- Dish soap molecules have one water-loving end and one oil-loving end. They surround each oil droplet so water can carry it away.
- An oil stain can be invisible on wet fabric and reappear once dry; check before the dryer, because heat locks it in.
07 The material: white sneakers
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Chlorine bleach yellows the rubber and the synthetic parts of sneakers, and the glue. Oxygen bleach is the whitener to use.
- Yellow halos after washing white canvas are often detergent residue that oxidised in the sun: rinse thoroughly and dry in shade.
The white sneakers file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an apron when frying, keep a box of cornstarch near the stove, and treat oil marks before the first wash: dryers lock grease in.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on grease on white sneakers?
Keep it cool: white sneakers itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with grease on white sneakers?
It is not needed for grease. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; grease responds better to cornstarch and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on grease?
Not chlorine bleach on white sneakers: it yellows rubber soles and the glue and synthetic parts of sneakers.
Will grease come out of white sneakers completely?
This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
When should I call a professional?
Leather, suede or designer sneakers.
What if it has already dried?
Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
