01 The short answer
To get super glue out of white sneakers, work in this order: (1) acetone, blotted; (2) scrape off the excess. Test acetone on a hidden spot first. For fully cured, cool adhesive only.
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
02 Never do this
- Pulling it off. Cured glue can take fibres (or skin) with it.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into white sneakers.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Acetone: highly flammable; ventilate.
- Acetone: it dissolves acetate and triacetate fabric (common in linings and evening wear) and many plastics.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Acetone, blotted
First check the fibre content of the outer fabric, lining and trims: do not use acetone on acetate, triacetate, modacrylic or an unidentified component. Stop if a hidden-area test changes the colour or finish. Ventilate and keep away from flames and heat. Treat only fully cured, cool glue according to its manufacturer instructions. Never wipe uncured cyanoacrylate with cotton, wool or paper: it can release enough heat to burn. If the glue is hot, smoking or touching skin, stop garment treatment and seek appropriate help.
Why it works: Acetone can soften cured cyanoacrylate; uncured glue on absorbent fibres presents a separate heat hazard.

Scrape off the excess
For fully cured, cool adhesive only. Do not wipe uncured super glue with cotton, wool or paper; stop garment treatment if it is hot, smoking or bonded to skin. Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the white sneakers, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Wash cool, air-dry
For fully cured, cool adhesive only. Do not wipe uncured super glue with cotton, wool or paper; stop garment treatment if it is hot, smoking or bonded to skin. Wash in a laundry bag on a cool cycle (or hand-wash), then stuff with paper and air-dry out of direct sun. Never use the dryer.
Why it works: Heat melts sneaker glue, and drying in sun can leave yellow detergent halos.
2 min hands-on
Test first: acetone on white sneakers. Check that the shoe is canvas, not leather or knit with glued panels, before any soaking.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What super glue is made of
- Polymer
Super glue is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
- Super glue (cyanoacrylate) cures by reacting with moisture, including the water in the air and on fabric, which is why it grabs cotton so fast.
- A large drop on cotton can get hot enough to burn: the reaction with cotton fibres releases heat.
- Acetone dissolves cured super glue, but it also dissolves acetate fabrics, plastics and wood finishes.
07 The material: white sneakers
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Chlorine bleach yellows the rubber and the synthetic parts of sneakers, and the glue. Oxygen bleach is the whitener to use.
- Yellow halos after washing white canvas are often detergent residue that oxidised in the sun: rinse thoroughly and dry in shade.
The white sneakers file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Use super glue according to its label, on a protected surface away from fabric. Keep uncured glue away from cotton, wool and paper because rapid curing can release enough heat to burn.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on super glue on white sneakers?
Keep it cool: white sneakers itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with super glue on white sneakers?
It is not needed for super glue. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; super glue responds better to acetone and enzyme laundry detergent.
Can I use bleach on super glue?
Not chlorine bleach on white sneakers: it yellows rubber soles and the glue and synthetic parts of sneakers.
Will super glue come out of white sneakers completely?
This has a higher editorial difficulty rating. Consider professional cleaning rather than stronger or repeated home treatments.
When should I call a professional?
Leather, suede or designer sneakers.
