Grease and cooking oil stains: the dossier

Grease is mostly oil and fat. It sets once it is washed and dried. First move, on almost anything: cover it with cornstarch to draw out the oil, then work in dish soap.

01 What it is made of

  • Oil and fat

The oily part of grease will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.

02 Field notes

  • Grease stains look like dark wet patches that never dry because oil fills the gaps between fibres and lets more light through. They add no colour, only translucency.
  • Dish soap molecules have one water-loving end and one oil-loving end. They surround each oil droplet so water can carry it away.
  • An oil stain can be invisible on wet fabric and reappear once dry; check before the dryer, because heat locks it in.

03 The first minute, anywhere

Whatever it landed on: cover it with cornstarch to draw out the oil, then work in dish soap. It sets once it is washed and dried, so speed beats strength.

05 Step by step: grease on clothes

The most-searched combination for grease. The full file adds the chemistry, the set-in variant and questions.

    1. Draw out the oil

Cover the stain completely with cornstarch (or baking soda or talc) and leave it 15–30 minutes. Brush or vacuum it off, and repeat while the powder still comes up darker.

    2. Work in dish soap

Work a few drops of clear dish soap into both sides of the stain with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it 5–10 minutes, then rinse with water as warm as the care label allows, up to 40 °C (104 °F).

    3. Wash and check

Wash as normal at the warmest temperature the care label allows. Check the spot before it goes anywhere near a dryer; air-dry it if any trace remains, because heat sets what is left.

06 How the method changes by material

The order of steps stays the same everywhere; what changes is which products each material can take. Across the 27 files for grease:

    • Soap and water: left out on suede. Liquid soap leaves water marks in suede; dry methods come first.

    Cornstarch 26 of 27 files

Fine starch powder can absorb some fresh oil. Talc and baby powders have different formulations and are not interchangeable products. Avoid inhaling powders. Cover the fresh oily stain completely, leave 15–30 minutes (overnight for leather and suede), brush or vacuum off, repeat while the powder still darkens.

Dish soap 23 of 27 files

Liquid hand dishwashing detergent: anionic surfactants built to lift grease. A few drops worked in with a fingertip or soft brush, or about ½ tsp in 1 cup (240 ml) of water for blotting. Use a clear, dye-free one on light fabrics.

Enzyme laundry detergent 9 of 27 files

Laundry detergent may contain protease, amylase, lipase or other enzymes; check the actual formulation and fabric restrictions. Pretreat or wash only as the detergent and care labels permit, using the stated dilution and contact time.

    09 Why the surface matters

Grease is manageable on quartz countertop and tough on wool rug. The difference is handling: Use as little liquid as possible on a wool rug: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.

Across the 27 surfaces on file, 1 rate easy or manageable, 14 stubborn and 12 tough or specialist. Delicate fibres (wool, silk, rayon), anything you cannot rinse (carpet, upholstery, mattresses) and porous stone push the rating up.

10 Also common: grease on carpet

    1. Draw out the oil. Cornstarch on it, 15–30 min, brush off.
    2. Blot with soapy foam. Soapy foam: dab, blot, rinse-blot.
    3. Rinse, blot, dry.

    11 Prevention

Wear an apron when frying, keep a box of cornstarch near the stove, and treat oil marks before the first wash: dryers lock grease in.

    12 Questions

    Does hot water set grease?

Not in the way it sets protein stains. Once the first steps are done, warm water within the care label helps dissolve the oily part; still check before any dryer.

Can you use bleach on grease?

Chlorine bleach is a last resort only on white, bleach-safe cotton.

    Does vinegar help with grease?

It is not part of any grease method on file; cornstarch and dish soap do more of the work.

    How fast does grease set?

It sets once it is washed and dried. This may be difficult to remove. Repeated treatment can damage the item; a persistent mark is a reason to consult a professional.
