01 The short answer
To get hair dye out of a couch, work in this order: (1) blot, don't rub; (2) sponge with cold water; (3) soap-and-vinegar blot; (4) dab with alcohol; (5) oxygen bleach dab. The key measure: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp vinegar + 2 cups cool water. Test white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Blot with a cloth barely damp with plain water to rinse, then press dry with a towel.
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them.
- Leaving it until morning. Oxidative dyes keep developing for 30 minutes or more.
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It untwists the pile and spreads the stain sideways; press and lift instead.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a couch.
- Find the actual cleaning instructions: W permits suitable water-based spot cleaners; W/S permits suitable water- or solvent-based products; S requires its specified solvent method, preferably professional cleaning; X permits vacuuming or light brushing only. If the code is missing, obtain manufacturer advice before using liquids.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Blot, don't rub
Press a thick pad of white paper towels or a folded white towel onto the spill and lift straight up. Swap to a dry section each time it picks up colour. Press straight down; pushing sideways drives the liquid into the cushion. Work from the outside edge towards the centre.
Why it works: Most of the stain is still liquid. Every drop you lift now is one that never reaches the backing, and rubbing untwists and frays the pile.
3 min hands-on
Sponge with cold water
Dampen a white cloth in cold water, press it onto the stain, then blot with a dry cloth. Repeat a few times. Use as little water as you can so it does not soak through to the padding.
Why it works: Cool water dilutes the stain before its colour has time to bond to the couch.
4 min hands-on
Soap-and-vinegar blot
Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of clear dish soap and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups (480 ml) of cool water. Sponge it onto the stain with a white cloth, leave 5–10 minutes, blot with a dry cloth, then sponge with plain cool water and blot dry.
Why it works: This is the classic tannin spotter: the soap loosens the stain and the mild acid stops tannins from setting and helps lift their colour.

Dab with alcohol
Dab rubbing alcohol onto the stain with a cotton pad or white cloth, then blot with a dry cloth; the ink transfers to the cloth. Change to a clean area each time. Do not pour it on.
Why it works: Hair dye dissolves in alcohol but not water, and alcohol evaporates before it can soak the backing.
6 min hands-on
Oxygen bleach dab
Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.
Why it works: Oxygen bleach breaks down the pigment that soap leaves behind, without the damage chlorine would do.
4 min hands-on
Rinse, blot, brush
Blot with a cloth barely damp with plain water to rinse, then press dry with a towel. Dry quickly with a fan and brush the fabric once dry.
Why it works: Residue and slow drying are what cause rings on upholstery.
2 min hands-on
Test first: white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on a couch. Find the cleaning code under a cushion: W means water-based cleaners, S means solvent only, W/S either, X vacuum only.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting.
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
- An old stain in carpet or upholstery may have reached the backing or padding. If it keeps coming back as it dries, a professional hot-water extraction is the next step.
If a shadow reappears as the couch dries, liquid has wicked up from the padding or backing. Blot again with plain water, then press dry under a weighted towel so the moisture moves into the towel instead of back to the surface.
Tannin and dye shadows can darken as they oxidise in air. If a faint mark is still there when dry, repeat the colour-lifting step rather than scrubbing.
06 What hair dye is made of
- Dye
Hair dye carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Permanent hair dye forms large colour molecules inside the hair shaft by oxidation. On fabric the same reaction runs, so fresh dye comes out far more easily than dye that has had 30 minutes to develop.
- Bright semi-permanent colours (blue, pink, purple) are direct dyes that stain grout and pale counters on contact; wipe splashes immediately.
07 The material: fabric couch
Use as little liquid as possible on a couch: blot and dab rather than pour, because whatever soaks in cannot be rinsed out properly.
No rubbing at all; every step is a press-and-lift.
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Upholstery cleaning codes are printed on the tag under the cushions: W, S, W/S or X. Using water on an S fabric leaves a ring.
- Removable cushion covers often should not be machine-washed: they can shrink, and the colour will no longer match the rest of the sofa.
The fabric couch file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an old towel and gloves, wipe any splash on grout or counters immediately, and apply petroleum jelly along the hairline and on nearby surfaces.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on hair dye on a couch?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with hair dye on a couch?
Yes, diluted. It is part of the method above: mild acid helps lift mineral residue, but test it first: no material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional.
Can I use bleach on hair dye?
Not chlorine bleach on couch: it permanently bleaches upholstery and weakens the fibres. Oxygen bleach, used as described above, is the gentler option.
Will hair dye come out of a couch completely?
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
When should I call a professional?
Code X fabrics, silk or velvet upholstery, and anything with a water stain already showing. For this stain in particular, a professional cleaner (tell them it is hair dye) has solvents and spotting agents that home kits do not.
What if it has already dried?
Soften it first: lay a white cloth dampened with the cleaning solution on the stain for 10 minutes before you start blotting. A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
