01 The short answer
To get hair dye out of jeans, work in this order: (1) blot, don't rub; (2) flush with cold water; (3) soap-and-vinegar sponge; (4) alcohol, blotted through; (5) oxygen bleach soak. The key measure: 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp vinegar + 2 cups cool water. Test white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on a hidden spot first. Wash inside out in cold water.
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them.
- Leaving it until morning. Oxidative dyes keep developing for 30 minutes or more.
- The dryer before it is gone. Dryer heat locks in whatever is left. Air-dry and check first.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into jeans.
- Read the fibre and care labels, including lining and trims. Use only treatments permitted by both the item and product labels; a crossed-out triangle prohibits bleach.
- Rubbing alcohol: flammable: no open flames, and let it evaporate before using heat.
- Rubbing alcohol: never mix with chlorine bleach (chloroform and other toxic compounds).
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
- The listed products are not permission to combine treatments. Use each only if the exact item and product labels permit it, including any change of product. Rinsing or blotting does not establish compatibility; ask the manufacturers or a professional if unsure.
04 The method
Blot, don't rub
Press a white cloth or paper towel onto the stain and lift straight up, moving to a clean part of the cloth each time. Work from the outside edge inwards so you do not spread it.
Why it works: Lifting the liquid now means less to remove later; rubbing spreads it and pushes it deeper.
2 min hands-on
Flush with cold water
Turn the item inside out and hold the stain under a cold running tap, so water pushes the stain back out the way it came in. Keep going until the water runs clear.
Why it works: Cool water dilutes the stain before its colour has time to bond to the jeans.
3 min hands-on
Soap-and-vinegar sponge
Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of clear dish soap and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups (480 ml) of cool water. Sponge it into the stain, leave 10–15 minutes, then rinse in cool water.
Why it works: Soap loosens the stain; the mild acid keeps tannins from setting and helps lift colour. Bar soap, which is alkaline, would do the opposite.
3 min hands-on · 15 min waiting
Alcohol, blotted through
Put a folded paper towel under the stain. Dab rubbing alcohol on from above with a cotton pad; the ink dissolves and transfers into the towel underneath. Keep moving to clean sections of towel and pad until nothing more comes out.
Why it works: Hair dye is soluble in alcohol, not water. Blotting through pushes it out of the fabric instead of spreading it sideways.
8 min hands-on
Oxygen bleach soak
Only if both the item and product labels permit oxygen bleach: use the stated amount, water temperature and contact time for that exact product. Dissolve powder as directed, pretest colours, rinse thoroughly, and never add other cleaners or store the solution sealed. Stop if appearance changes.
Why it works: It breaks down the pigment that washing leaves behind, and it is colour-safe on most dyes.
3 min hands-on
Wash cold, inside out
Wash inside out in cold water. Check the spot before it goes anywhere near a dryer; air-dry it if any trace remains, because heat sets what is left.
Why it works: Cold water and inside-out washing protect indigo while removing the treatment.
2 min hands-on
Test first: white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach on jeans. Rub a damp white cloth inside the waistband: if it turns blue, the indigo is loose and any bleach will leave a pale patch.
05 Dried, set, or back again?
- A dried stain may need pretreatment with a product labelled for this fabric. Follow its application and contact-time directions; do not assume that undiluted detergent or a long soak is suitable.
- A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
Tannin and dye shadows can darken as they oxidise in air. If a faint mark is still there when dry, repeat the colour-lifting step rather than scrubbing.
06 What hair dye is made of
- Dye
Hair dye carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Permanent hair dye forms large colour molecules inside the hair shaft by oxidation. On fabric the same reaction runs, so fresh dye comes out far more easily than dye that has had 30 minutes to develop.
- Bright semi-permanent colours (blue, pink, purple) are direct dyes that stain grout and pale counters on contact; wipe splashes immediately.
07 The material: jeans
Soaking is allowed, which gives enzymes and oxygen bleach time to work without scrubbing.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- Indigo sits on the surface of denim fibres rather than soaking in, which is why denim fades and why bleaching agents leave obvious pale patches.
- Washing jeans inside out in cold water keeps both the colour and the stain treatment where you want them.
The jeans file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Wear an old towel and gloves, wipe any splash on grout or counters immediately, and apply petroleum jelly along the hairline and on nearby surfaces.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on hair dye on jeans?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with hair dye on jeans?
Yes, diluted. It is part of the method above: mild acid helps lift mineral residue, but test it first: no material-specific permission is established by this general entry. Check the exact item and product labels and pretest; if compatibility is unknown, consult the manufacturer or a professional.
Can I use bleach on hair dye?
Not chlorine bleach on jeans: it strips indigo and leaves an orange-white patch on denim. Oxygen bleach, used as described above, is the gentler option.
Will hair dye come out of jeans completely?
Consult a professional experienced with this material. The difficulty rating does not establish that a home method will work.
When should I call a professional?
Raw or selvedge denim you are fading on purpose. For this stain in particular, a professional cleaner (tell them it is hair dye) has solvents and spotting agents that home kits do not.
What if it has already dried or been through the dryer?
A dried stain may need pretreatment with a product labelled for this fabric. Follow its application and contact-time directions; do not assume that undiluted detergent or a long soak is suitable. A dried dye or tannin stain may persist. Stop if any colour transfers, the texture changes or a ring appears; do not repeatedly bleach or scrub a stubborn mark.
