01 The short answer
To get perfume out of a wood table, work in this order: (1) wipe with cold water; (2) wipe with soapy cloth. Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
02 Never do this
- Ironing over it. Heat browns leftover sugar and melts wax deeper into the fibres.
- Leaving liquid to stand. Moisture that sits on a finish turns into a white ring, then a black one.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a wood table.
- Identify the finish before treatment. Ring colour is only a clue, not a reliable diagnosis of damage depth.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Wipe with cold water
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in cold water, then dry it.
Why it works: This dilutes and lifts what is still on the surface before it dries on.

Wipe with soapy cloth
Wipe with a cloth wrung almost dry in warm water with a drop of dish soap, following the grain. Dry immediately.
Why it works: The finish keeps most stains on top; a damp cloth cleans it without soaking.

Dry and polish
Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Why it works: Moisture left on a finish turns into a white ring.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
- Old oil has partly oxidised and gone sticky; apply the degreasing step two or three times, and give powder an overnight stay where it is used.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What perfume is made of
- Oil and fat
- Dye
The oily part of perfume will not dissolve in water at all. It needs a surfactant such as dish soap, or a solvent, to break it up, and a dry powder can draw fresh oil out before you start.
Perfume carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Perfume is fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol. The alcohol evaporates in seconds; the oils, and any colour added, stay and can yellow fabric in light.
- Spraying perfume onto silk or satin is the classic cause of small dark spots; spray before you dress.
- The alcohol in perfume can mark wood finishes and polished marble, so do not set the bottle down wet.
07 The material: wood furniture and floors
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- White rings are moisture trapped in the finish and usually come out with gentle heat; black rings mean water reached the wood itself and reacted with its tannins.
- Shellac and some lacquers dissolve in alcohol, which is why a spilled cocktail can leave a cloudy, sticky patch on old furniture.
The wood furniture and floors file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Spray perfume on skin and let it dry before dressing; never spray it directly onto silk, satin or leather.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on perfume on a wood table?
Keep it cool: wood table itself does not tolerate water above about 30 °C (86 °F), whatever the stain.
Does vinegar help with perfume on a wood table?
It is not needed for perfume. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; perfume responds better to dish soap.
Can I use bleach on perfume?
Not chlorine bleach on wood table: it bleaches wood and can damage the finish.
Will perfume come out of a wood table completely?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
When should I call a professional?
Black water or urine stains that have gone into the wood, antiques, and French-polished (shellac) furniture.
