01 The short answer
To get slime out of a wood table, work in this order: (1) scrape off the excess; (2) dissolve it with vinegar; (3) wipe with soapy cloth. The key measure: soak it in white vinegar for 5 min. Test white vinegar on a hidden spot first. Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
- Leaving liquid to stand. Moisture that sits on a finish turns into a white ring, then a black one.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a wood table.
- Identify the finish before treatment. Ring colour is only a clue, not a reliable diagnosis of damage depth.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Scrape off the excess
Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the wood table, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.
2 min hands-on
Dissolve it with vinegar
Saturate what is left with white vinegar and wait about 5 minutes: the slime turns runny. Scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse.
Why it works: Slime is glue cross-linked by borate; acid breaks those links and turns it back into a liquid.

Wipe with soapy cloth
Wipe with a cloth wrung almost dry in warm water with a drop of dish soap, following the grain. Dry immediately.
Why it works: The finish keeps most stains on top; a damp cloth cleans it without soaking.
3 min hands-on
Dry and polish
Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Why it works: Moisture left on a finish turns into a white ring.
2 min hands-on
Test first: white vinegar on a wood table. Most stains sit in the finish, not the wood: white marks are in the finish (fixable), black marks have reached the wood (harder).
05 Dried, set, or back again?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What slime is made of
- Polymer
- Dye
Slime is a polymer: long molecules that set into a film or a sticky mass. Each one needs either its own solvent or a change of state, freezing or softening, rather than scrubbing.
Slime carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Slime is PVA glue cross-linked by borate. Vinegar's acid breaks those cross-links and turns the slime back into a runny liquid you can rinse away.
- Its colour is usually food dye, which may still need oxygen bleach once the slime is gone.
07 The material: wood furniture and floors
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- White rings are moisture trapped in the finish and usually come out with gentle heat; black rings mean water reached the wood itself and reacted with its tannins.
- Shellac and some lacquers dissolve in alcohol, which is why a spilled cocktail can leave a cloudy, sticky patch on old furniture.
The wood furniture and floors file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Play with slime on a tray or plastic tablecloth, away from carpets and upholstery, and keep it in a sealed container.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on slime on a wood table?
No. Heat helps pigments bond to the fibres before you have lifted them. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with slime on a wood table?
Yes, diluted. It is part of the method above: mild acid helps lift mineral residue, but test it first: diluted, it can be used on sealed wood, but it dulls some finishes over time.
Can I use bleach on slime?
Not chlorine bleach on wood table: it bleaches wood and can damage the finish.
Will slime come out of a wood table completely?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
When should I call a professional?
Black water or urine stains that have gone into the wood, antiques, and French-polished (shellac) furniture.
