01 How to use it

Paper on top and underneath, iron on low to medium with no steam, move the paper to a clean area each time it darkens.

  • Too hot and you scorch the fabric or set any dye in the wax.

How it works

Heat speeds up almost every chemical reaction, including the ones that bond stains to fibres. It helps melt fats and dissolve sugars, but it sets protein, tannin and dye stains that have not been lifted first.

Avoid routine home use on a couch, a microfiber couch, velvet, a car seat, leather, suede and marble. The table gives general restrictions; an unlisted restriction is not proof that a product is compatible.

02 What it works on

  • Wax

A warm iron over paper is strongest against wax. It is part of the method in 10 stain files, for stains such as crayon and candle wax.

03 Where it is safe

MaterialVerdictWhy
Fabric couchAvoidAn iron on fixed upholstery risks scorching or melting synthetic fibres; a hair dryer with blotting paper is gentler.
Microfiber couchAvoidPressing an iron on velvet or microfiber crushes the pile into a shiny, permanent-looking patch; use a hair dryer and blotting paper instead.
Velvet upholsteryAvoidPressing an iron on velvet or microfiber crushes the pile into a shiny, permanent-looking patch; use a hair dryer and blotting paper instead.
Car seatsAvoidAn iron on fixed upholstery risks scorching or melting synthetic fibres; a hair dryer with blotting paper is gentler.
LeatherAvoidHeat can shrink or mark leather; a hair dryer on low is gentler.
Suede and nubuckAvoidHeat mats suede; freeze and brush instead.
MarbleAvoidUse a plastic scraper on stone; heat is unnecessary.

04 How the files use it

A warm iron over paper appears in 10 stain files. The steps it is used in most:

  • Iron it into paper (10 files): Wax mixtures and fabric heat tolerance vary. Use heat only if the material care instructions permit it; a low iron setting can still damage fabric or set candle dye.

06 Questions

What stains does a warm iron over paper remove?

It works best on wax, which is why it appears in the files for crayon and candle wax.

How do you use a warm iron over paper safely?

Paper on top and underneath, iron on low to medium with no steam, move the paper to a clean area each time it darkens. Too hot and you scorch the fabric or set any dye in the wax.

What should you never mix with a warm iron over paper?

This reference cannot establish that any commercial cleaner has no dangerous mixing partner. Do not combine cleaners unless their exact manufacturers explicitly permit the use; rinsing alone does not establish compatibility for later treatment.

Where should you never use a warm iron over paper?

Nowhere on file is ruled out completely, but check the material file before using it on anything delicate.

Sources and limits

These references support general care principles and restrictions. They do not establish that this exact stain-and-material method has been tested. Product formulations, dyes and finishes vary. Difficulty ratings and hands-on times are editorial estimates; use product labels for dilution and contact time. Illustrations are generated diagrams, not observed cleaning results.
