01 How to use it
Paired with lemon juice for rust on white cotton; as a quick absorbent only if nothing else is to hand.
- On wine and berry stains it can draw the colour deeper as it dries.
How it works
Absorbents pull fresh liquid and oil out of a material by capillary action, like a wick. They are the gentlest first step on things you cannot wash.
The table gives general restrictions; an unlisted restriction is not proof that a product is compatible.
02 What it works on
- Minerals and metal
Salt is strongest against minerals and metal. It is part of the method in 7 stain files, for stains such as sunscreen and rust.

04 How the files use it
Salt appears in 7 stain files. The steps it is used in most:
- Lemon, salt and sun (7 files): The orange is an iron compound, so it comes out with an iron remover, not a detergent. Citric acid pulls iron into solution, and sunlight speeds it up.
05 Files that use it
06 Myth files
- Does salt get red wine out? Salt soaks up some liquid, but it does not lift wine pigment and can lock colour in as it dries.
07 Questions
What stains does salt remove?
It works best on minerals and metal, which is why it appears in the files for sunscreen and rust.
How do you use salt safely?
Paired with lemon juice for rust on white cotton; as a quick absorbent only if nothing else is to hand. On wine and berry stains it can draw the colour deeper as it dries.
What should you never mix with salt?
This reference cannot establish that any commercial cleaner has no dangerous mixing partner. Do not combine cleaners unless their exact manufacturers explicitly permit the use; rinsing alone does not establish compatibility for later treatment.
Where should you never use salt?
Nowhere on file is ruled out completely, but check the material file before using it on anything delicate.
