Can you use hydrogen peroxide on granite?

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume hydrogen peroxide is permitted on granite; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Used in poultices for organic stains on light stone; it can lighten dark stone.

01 The verdict

  • Test first Used in poultices for organic stains on light stone; it can lighten dark stone.

02 Why: the two sides

Granite

Granite is porous stone, so spills can soak in and stains have to be drawn back out.

Granite itself is tough, but its sealer is not; harsh chemicals wear it away and let the next spill in.

It is porous, so time matters: the longer a spill sits, the deeper it goes.

Hydrogen peroxide 3%

The 3% solution sold in brown bottles at pharmacies. A mild oxidising bleach. pH 4–5.

It can bleach dyes, so test colours first.

03 How to use it on granite

On granite, the files use it like this (red wine, step 4, "peroxide poultice"): If colour has soaked in, mix baking soda (or plain flour) with 3% hydrogen peroxide into a peanut-butter paste. Spread it 6 mm (¼ in) thick over the stain, cover with plastic wrap, tape the edges, poke a few holes and leave it 24 hours. Scrape off with plastic, rinse and dry. Test dark stone first.

  • It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.

06 What the granite files use most

Across the 32 stain files for granite, these are the products the methods rely on most, hydrogen peroxide among them.

07 More about hydrogen peroxide

Oxidisers break the chemical bonds that make many stains coloured, so the stain stops absorbing light even if some residue remains. They work on tannins, dyes and plant pigments, not on grease or mineral particles.

On an ingredient list, hydrogen peroxide shows up as hydrogen peroxide (also in many "oxy" sprays).

  • It can bleach dyes, so test colours first.
  • Do not mix with vinegar, chlorine bleach or other cleaning products. The vinegar restriction is not limited to closed containers.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach, white vinegar and acetone. Why.

08 What to watch for

Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Rinse it off with plenty of plain water and let the item dry naturally before judging. Most damage shows once dry: loss of colour, a change in texture or a ring.

09 Questions

Is diluted hydrogen peroxide safe on granite?

Yes. Use only a peroxide product labelled for the material, at its labelled strength and contact time; pretest and rinse as directed. Keep it in its dark bottle; use its expiry date and storage instructions. Fizzing on an arbitrary surface is not a reliable strength test.

What should I use on granite instead of hydrogen peroxide?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on granite the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix hydrogen peroxide with other cleaners on granite?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does hydrogen peroxide remove stains from granite?

It appears in generated files for red wine, coffee, tea, cola and orange juice and 14 more. This count is not experimental evidence of effectiveness or permission to use it on the actual item.

How long can hydrogen peroxide stay on granite?

There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
