Can you use oxygen bleach on granite?

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume oxygen bleach is permitted on granite; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety. Not acidic, so it will not etch, but rinse it off fully and test on a hidden area.

01 The verdict

Compatibility needs checking. Do not assume oxygen bleach is permitted on granite; confirm the exact item and product instructions, then pretest an allowed treatment. A patch test alone does not establish safety.

  • Test first Not acidic, so it will not etch, but rinse it off fully and test on a hidden area.

02 Why: the two sides

Granite

Granite is porous stone, so spills can soak in and stains have to be drawn back out.

Granite itself is tough, but its sealer is not; harsh chemicals wear it away and let the next spill in.

It is porous, so time matters: the longer a spill sits, the deeper it goes.

Oxygen bleach

Sodium percarbonate powder, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water. Colour-safe on most dyes, but alkaline. pH 10–11.

Never mix with chlorine bleach or unapproved cleaning products.

03 How to use it on granite

General directions: Use the exact product label for dose, temperature, contact time and compatible materials. Do not use on wool, silk or dry-clean-only items unless that exact product explicitly permits it. Never store a prepared solution in a sealed container.

  • It tolerates hot water (up to about 60 °C (140 °F)) for the final wash, but only after any protein has been rinsed out cold.

05 What the granite files use most

Across the 32 stain files for granite, these are the products the methods rely on most; oxygen bleach is not among the top five.

06 More about oxygen bleach

Oxidisers break the chemical bonds that make many stains coloured, so the stain stops absorbing light even if some residue remains. They work on tannins, dyes and plant pigments, not on grease or mineral particles.

On an ingredient list, oxygen bleach shows up as sodium percarbonate, sodium perborate or "oxygen bleach".

  • Can tarnish metal buttons, zips and trims during long soaks.

Never mix it with chlorine bleach. Why.

07 What to watch for

Stop if you see colour on your cloth, a change in sheen or texture, or a ring forming at the edge of the damp area. Rinse it off with plenty of plain water and let the item dry naturally before judging. Most damage shows once dry: loss of colour, a change in texture or a ring.

08 Questions

Is diluted oxygen bleach safe on granite?

Yes. Use the exact product label for dose, temperature, contact time and compatible materials. Do not use on wool, silk or dry-clean-only items unless that exact product explicitly permits it. Never store a prepared solution in a sealed container.

What should I use on granite instead of oxygen bleach?

Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on granite the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.

Can I mix oxygen bleach with other cleaners on granite?

Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.

Does oxygen bleach remove stains from granite?

None of the 32 files for granite uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.

How long can oxygen bleach stay on granite?

There is no universal contact time. Use only a compatible product at the labelled dilution and contact time; do not substitute a generic five-minute rule after a patch test.
