01 The short answer
To get candle wax out of a wood table, work in this order: (1) freeze it hard; (2) scrape off the excess; (3) warm and wipe; (4) wipe with soapy cloth. The key measure: bag of ice for 10 min, then chip it off. Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
02 Never do this
- Hot water. It melts wax deeper into the fibres.
- Rubbing or scrubbing. It spreads the stain and grinds it deeper; blot instead.
- Leaving liquid to stand. Moisture that sits on a finish turns into a white ring, then a black one.
03 Before you start
- Use white cloths or paper towels only: coloured ones can transfer their own dye into a wood table.
- Identify the finish before treatment. Ring colour is only a clue, not a reliable diagnosis of damage depth.
- Pretest every permitted treatment on an inconspicuous area, including trims, and let it dry. Stop for colour transfer, lightening, rings, stiffness or distortion. A successful spot test does not guarantee the whole item is safe.
04 The method
Freeze it hard
Hold a sealed bag of ice cubes on it for 5–10 minutes until it is hard and brittle. Small washable items can go in the freezer in a bag for an hour instead.
Why it works: Cold turns soft wax and gum polymers glassy, so they snap off instead of stretching into the fibres.

Scrape off the excess
Lift any thick or raised blobs with a spoon or the dull edge of a knife, scooping towards the centre. Do not press down: you want it off the wood table, not into it.
Why it works: Every bit of solid removed now is pigment and fat that never soaks in.

Warm and wipe
Warm the remaining wax with a hair dryer on low, held about 15 cm (6 in) away and kept moving, then wipe it off with a paper towel as it softens.
Why it works: Gentle heat melts the residue without the direct contact of an iron, which could mark the wood table.

Wipe with soapy cloth
Wipe with a cloth wrung almost dry in warm water with a drop of dish soap, following the grain. Dry immediately.
Why it works: The finish keeps most stains on top; a damp cloth cleans it without soaking.

Dry and polish
Dry thoroughly and, once completely dry, buff with furniture polish or wax if the area looks dull.
Why it works: Moisture left on a finish turns into a white ring.

05 Dried, set, or back again?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
Assess the mark only once the item has dried according to its care instructions. If it remains, do not keep repeating or strengthening treatment; obtain advice for the exact material and product.
06 What candle wax is made of
- Wax
- Dye
Candle wax contains wax, which is solid at room temperature. Cold makes it brittle enough to snap off; gentle heat melts it so it can be drawn into paper.
Candle wax carries dye that soaks into fibres rather than sitting on them. Depending on the dye, alcohol dissolves it, oxygen bleach breaks it down, or sunlight fades it, and speed matters more than strength.
- Paraffin candle wax melts at about 50–60 °C, below a low iron setting, so gentle heat lifts it into paper. Soy wax is softer and oilier and leaves more greasy residue.
- Coloured candles leave a dye stain once the wax is gone, so check before washing.
07 The material: wood furniture and floors
No soaking, so each treatment is applied, given a few minutes, and blotted away.
Water stays at or below 30 °C (86 °F) the whole way through.
- White rings are moisture trapped in the finish and usually come out with gentle heat; black rings mean water reached the wood itself and reacted with its tannins.
- Shellac and some lacquers dissolve in alcohol, which is why a spilled cocktail can leave a cloudy, sticky patch on old furniture.
The wood furniture and floors file rates every common cleaner for it.
08 Next time
Use deep holders or trays under candles, trim wicks to stop dripping, and never move a candle while the wax is liquid.
09 Questions
Can I use hot water on candle wax on a wood table?
No. It melts wax deeper into the fibres. Keep to cold water until the stain is completely gone.
Does vinegar help with candle wax on a wood table?
It is not needed for candle wax. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps with tannin and mineral residue; candle wax responds better to ice and dish soap.
Can I use bleach on candle wax?
Not chlorine bleach on wood table: it bleaches wood and can damage the finish.
Will candle wax come out of a wood table completely?
Removal is not guaranteed. Use only label-compatible treatments and stop if the material changes.
When should I call a professional?
Black water or urine stains that have gone into the wood, antiques, and French-polished (shellac) furniture.
