- Never Alkaline peroxide damages wool, cashmere and silk; the packs say so.
02 Why: the two sides
Silk
Silk is a protein fibre (fibroin, spun by silkworms), so it reacts to alkalis, oxidisers and protein-digesting enzymes much as hair does.
It is delicate: short contact times and gentle handling matter as much as the product.
The fibre loses much of its strength when wet, so rubbing or wringing damages it.
Oxygen bleach
Sodium percarbonate powder, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water. Colour-safe on most dyes, but alkaline. pH 10–11.
Never mix with chlorine bleach or unapproved cleaning products.
03 Use instead
Follow the stain file for the specific stain on silk; each one picks the safe product for that combination.

05 What the silk files use most
Across the 30 stain files for silk, these are the products the methods rely on most; oxygen bleach is not among the top five.
06 More about oxygen bleach
Oxidisers break the chemical bonds that make many stains coloured, so the stain stops absorbing light even if some residue remains. They work on tannins, dyes and plant pigments, not on grease or mineral particles.
On an ingredient list, oxygen bleach shows up as sodium percarbonate, sodium perborate or "oxygen bleach".
- Can tarnish metal buttons, zips and trims during long soaks.
Never mix it with chlorine bleach. Why.
07 Already used it?
Rinse immediately and thoroughly in cool water. If the area feels harsh, thin or looks yellow, the fibre itself is damaged; a specialist cleaner may be able to even out the colour, but weakened fibre cannot be restored.
08 Questions
Is diluted oxygen bleach safe on silk?
No. Dilution slows the damage but does not change what oxygen bleach does to silk: alkaline peroxide damages wool, cashmere and silk; the packs say so.
What should I use on silk instead of oxygen bleach?
Use the method in the stain file for the specific stain: on silk the right product depends more on the stain than on habit.
Can I mix oxygen bleach with other cleaners on silk?
Do not combine cleaners unless the exact product manufacturers explicitly direct that use. This ingredient-level file cannot establish compatibility of commercial formulas. Rinsing alone does not prove that later use of a different cleaner is safe, especially on porous materials.
Does oxygen bleach remove stains from silk?
None of the 30 files for silk uses it. Absence from the model does not establish either effectiveness or safety.
How long can oxygen bleach stay on silk?
Do not use it as a routine home treatment on this material. For accidental contact, follow the product and item instructions and obtain advice if needed.
